Manchester United fans top 'football-related offences' list as UK Home Office releases arrest figures from 2024-25 season

Manchester United supporters were responsible for the highest number of football-related arrests in England and Wales during the 2024–25 season, according to the latest data published by the UK Home Office. Over the 10-month reporting period, 121 arrests were linked to fans of the Old Trafford club, more than any other team in the top flight, as revealed by The Athletic.

In total, 1,932 football-related arrests were recorded across all regulated fixtures in England and Wales during the 2024–25 campaign. This marks an 11 per cent decrease compared to the previous season, with 235 fewer incidents reported. The Red Devils topped the list, followed by local rivals Manchester City, whose fan base accounted for 94 arrests, and West Ham United, who registered 77 arrests.

One of the most significant shifts came from Aston Villa, whose number of arrests rose dramatically. The Birmingham-based club saw 71 arrests, a notable increase from just 26 incidents during the 2023–24 season. This jump placed them fifth overall, trailing Chelsea who had 76 arrests, and highlights growing concerns around fan conduct at Villa Park.

While West Ham no longer leads in total arrests, they remain at the top in two related categories. The east London side has the highest number of fans with active football banning orders, totalling 112, and also issued 39 new banning orders during the campaign, again the highest figure among all clubs. Chelsea followed with 31 and Manchester United came in third with 28 banning orders imposed on their supporters in the 2024–25 season. In the 2024–25 season, a total of 685 new banning orders were issued – a slight increase from the 683 recorded in the previous year. This brings the current number of active FBOs across England and Wales to 2,439.

WHAT THE UK POLICING MINISTER SAID

Commenting on the annual findings, Dame Diana Johnson, the UK's policing minister, praised ongoing enforcement efforts to clean up the game.

“Today’s statistics show that these efforts are paying off and strong action is being taken to stop violence and disorder from ruining football,” she said.

Gerrard loves him: Rangers may now sign £75k-p/w ace in surprise new role

da gbg bet: With Steven Gerrard potentially on his way back to the club, Rangers could now reportedly bring an experienced star to Ibrox this summer in a surprising new role at the club.

Rangers' manager update

da bet7: With the season now over, the Gers have instantly turned their attention towards finding their next permanent manager. It’s a decision that those at Ibrox must get right as the 49ers look to make an instant statement in Scotland. Just who will take to the hot seat next is the unanswered question. So far, a range of names have been linked with the role with Davide Ancelotti and Gerrard particularly standing out.

According to recent reports, Gerrard could return to Ibrox for the first time since leaving them for the chance to take charge of Aston Villa in 2021 in what may receive a mixed reaction. The Liverpool legend would certainly need to get off to a strong start back in Scotland in an attempt to get any frustrated fans back onside four years on from his departure.

StevenGerrard

Meanwhile, Ancelotti is also an interesting candidate. The assistant manager to his father, the legendary Carlo Ancelotti, for much of his career, he could now choose to break away and commence his own managerial spell.

Igniting reports, his father has chosen not to take Ancelotti to the Brazil national team with him, claiming that his son is in talks with a European club. The former Real Madrid manager told reporters: “Davide is currently in negotiations with a European team. I don’t think it’s right for him to come with me. If he goes to a club, I wish him the best. And if not, he can come back to us at any time.”

Whether that European club is Rangers remains to be seen, but Ancelotti is certainly one to watch alongside Gerrard.

Gerrard could bring Henderson with him to Rangers

If it is to be Gerrard, then he could bring a Premier League-winning captain with him to Ibrox. According to reports from the Netherlands, as relayed by The Daily Record, Rangers and Gerrard are now interested in signing Jordan Henderson from Ajax this summer in an unexpected coaching role, with the former Liverpool midfielder reportedly open to a new adventure.

It’s been a tough few years for Henderson on the pitch. His decision to leave Liverpool to join Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq side in 2023 was ultimately one that he came to regret. Meanwhile, his time at Ajax has since been mixed and he could be on his way out of the Dutch giants just 18 months after arriving. From being a Premier League-winning captain at Anfield, Henderson is at a major career crossroads.

If anyone knows about the midfielder’s quality too, it is Gerrard. The Anfield hero played together with Henderson, currently on a base salary of £75,000-a-week, at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield for a number of years and shared high praise for his former teammate back in 2019 – telling reporters: “Some people don’t see the stuff behind the scenes, the gym work, the way he eats, but he is an incredible role model.

“He is selfless. He puts himself at the back of the queue because he looks after everyone else first. He puts Jordan Henderson last.”

He may leave for more than Phillips: Leeds have hit gold on "electric" ace

Leeds United’s transfer business over the last couple of years has been nothing short of sensational, playing a massive role in their ability to secure the Championship title.

After their failure to win the play-offs in the 2023/24 season, multiple key players departed Elland Road for a move to the Premier League, resulting in the loss of numerous star men.

Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray were all sold, bringing in over £100m in player sales – a simply staggering feat for a side in England’s second-tier.

However, such funds allowed for the arrival of the likes of Ao Tanaka and Jayden Bogle, with both players playing a vital role in Daniel Farke’s side this campaign – as seen by their EFL Team of the Season inclusions.

If they are to secure survival in 2025/26, the hierarchy will need to replicate such dealings, handing the manager the funds to land quality talents who can further bolster the ranks in Yorkshire.

Leeds’ activity in the transfer window ahead of the summer

Even though the window is yet to open, Leeds have already been active in the market, looking to land multiple players to provide depth to multiple areas of Farke’s side.

The midfield department has arguably seen the most interest generated, with Manchester City’s James McAtee and Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes just two names thrown into the mix.

The latter could be available for a fee in the region of £30m after the Saints suffered an immediate return to the Championship, with the Whites looking to take advantage of such a situation.

As for the forward line, Jamie Vardy has been a name mentioned in recent weeks, with the 38-year-old to be a free agent this summer after announcing he would be departing Leicester City at the end of his current deal.

However, if any player does complete a switch to Yorkshire in the coming months, they will have high standards to live up to, based on the displays produced by multiple players during their previous stint in the top-flight.

The Leeds star who could be sold for more than Phillips

Kalvin Phillips came through the Leeds academy ranks and built a name for himself, playing a vital role in the previous promotion-winning season before becoming a mainstay in the Premier League.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The 29-year-old made a total of 234 appearances for the Whites, including 49 in the top-flight, being a key reason why the side finished 9th in their first season back in the top-flight back in 2020/21.

Such displays didn’t go unnoticed, leading to various England call-ups and featuring under Gareth Southgate for the national team at Euro 2020.

He would ultimately leave in a £45m deal to join Manchester City in the summer of 2022, earning the club a huge sum of money, with his career rapidly declining ever since, as seen by his loan spell at now-relegated Ipswich Town.

However, the club have another talent in the form of Wilfried Gnonto, who could leave for a higher figure if he continues on the current trajectory he’s on at Elland.

The “electric” ace, as labelled by statistician Statman Dave, has starred in Yorkshire over the last couple of years after his £3.8m transfer from FC Zurich in the summer of 2022.

He’s managed to find the net on 22 occasions in his 118 appearances, including one against Plymouth Argyle on the final day of the season, securing the club the Championship title as a result.

Such performances and tallies have led to interest over the last couple of years, with numerous sides across the globe registering interest in landing the Italian talent.

Most notably, Gnonto was the subject of huge interest from Saudi Arabia back in January, but the Whites refused to sell the 21-year-old, demanding a fee in the region of £50m for his services.

The return to the Premier League this season hands him the platform to thrive once more, after previously registering four goals and two assists in his last season in the top-flight.

Should he manage to build on his previous term in England’s top-flight, his price tag would certainly increase further over the coming months – having the potential to be a club-record departure.

No supporter will want to lose such a talent in the near future, with the 21-year-old having the chance to build on his success in Yorkshire and play a key role in their survival hopes.

However, it once again highlights the superb work done by the hierarchy in recent times, with such business needing to be replicated during the upcoming window.

Perez willing to sell: Man City now in talks with "special" Real Madrid ace

As Real Madrid president Florentino Perez looks to make room for even more stars this summer, Manchester City could reportedly take full advantage by welcoming an attacking talent of their own.

Man City "a thousand million points behind Liverpool" – Guardiola

It was around this time last year that Manchester City were on their way to securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title before squaring off against Manchester United in the FA Cup final. On a Wembley outing which ultimately ended in defeat, Pep Guardiola’s side could have been forgiven for their title hangover which allowed United to take full advantage.

A year on, however, they will not be handed that same forgiveness if they fall to defeat against Crystal Palace this weekend. The Citizens are no longer champions. It’s Liverpool’s crown to lose these days. Instead, Guardiola has endured his most difficult season in the Manchester City dugout and is yet to secure Champions League qualification with just two games remaining.

Guardiola even went as far as to admit that victory in the FA Cup final would not suddenly turn City’s season into a success, telling reporters: “The damage would be minimum. It’s not going to confuse [that] the season has been good. The club has to take the decision, the right ones, so next season will be better.

“We are a thousand million points behind Liverpool. I said many times the season hasn’t been good because we define if the season is good or not with the Premier League. This season it could not happen, at the same time we tried to avoid the damage. We have to be calm now and recover.”

However, what such a difficult campaign has seemingly done is spark Manchester City into life in the transfer market. Already, names such as Florian Wirtz are threatening to steal the headlines and he could yet be joined by a Real Madrid star at The Etihad.

Man City in direct contact with Rodrygo

According to Sport in Spain, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City are now in direct contact with Rodrygo over a summer move. The Real Madrid winger is someone that Perez is reportedly willing to sell for the right price, whilst the Brazilian himself has grown discontent with his role towards the end of Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure.

It’s not often that Madrid lose a Galactico, but as Rodrygo looks to become the main man, the Spaniards could do just that if Manchester City make their move in the coming months.

With 13 goals and 10 assists to his name this season, the Brazilian winger has impressed once again under Ancelotti, who has been a fan of his for some time despite the winger’s reported discontent.

The Real Madrid boss told reporters in 2022: “Both Valverde and Rodrygo are special players. And that’s what modern-day footballers have to be. They can play in different positions and they possess both technical and physical attributes.”

Dimitar Berbatov claimed Tottenham legend was as good as Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic

Tottenham Hotspur have had some of the greatest players in Premier League history down the years, from Ballon d’Or winners like Luka Modric to international superstars such as Gareth Bale, but former striker Dimitar Berbatov believes one Spurs star was even better than people realised.

Ending their trophy drought by winning the Europa League against Manchester United, Tottenham’s 2024/25 campaign was one of their worst ever seasons with one of the best ever endings, as Ange Postecoglou made good on his promise that he “always wins things” in his second season at a club.

The Lilywhites had gone 17 years without winning a major honour, seeing legendary players like Harry Kane go their entire careers at the club without ever winning a trophy.

Tottenham's best Premier League players in pictures

One famous player who did manager to secure silverware for the club was defender Ledley King. The Tottenham academy graduate made 268 league appearances for the club to go with 21 caps for England, and was a part of the last Tottenham team to win a trophy before the triumph in Bilbao, winning the League Cup in 2008.

However, his career was largely a case of ‘what if’, as former manager Harry Redknapp once revealed he rarely trained due to his injuries.

Berbatov: Ledley King was as good as Ferdinand and Vidic

One man who was lucky enough to play with several of the best centre-backs in Premier League history was Berbatov, who joined Manchester United in 2008 after two successful seasons with Spurs, and he claimed King may just have been the best of the lot.

The Bulgaria legend revealed in an interview with TalkSPORT that for all his success at United – winning two Premier League titles – it was King who was right up there as one of his best ever teammates.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is another of King’s admirers, revealing he was the “only defender” in England who could take the ball off him “without you even noticing”.

King spent the 2020/21 season on Jose Mourinho’s first team staff and has since continued his work with the club in an ambassadorial role, while his name can still be heard ringing out around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 26th minute on match days.

Hopefully, he won’t have to wait another 17 years to see his favourite club lift another trophy.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Barvarians' transfer policy has been under scrutiny, especially after multiple high-profile rejections this summer. While they did land Michael Olise, many targets slipped through, frustrating fans and insiders alike. Krosche, in contrast, has built Frankfurt into a competitive force, with a Europa League title, DFB-Pokal final appearance and a third-place league finish to his name.

  • WHAT BASLER SAID

Basler has stirred speculation over Eberl’s future, claiming Bayern already have a successor lined up: “I've heard from various circles that they're almost certain to have reached some sort of agreement with Markus Krosche for the new season. I just wanted to put that out there, very slowly and discreetly.”

He also criticised Bayern’s recent efforts in the transfer market saying: “The transfer policy at FC Bayern is, of course, a bit chaotic. They want players, but then they don't get them, so they prefer to go somewhere else, and so on. Internationally, things haven't really worked out either. They're not particularly satisfied.”

He didn’t place all the blame on Eberl, though pointing to earlier decisions made under Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic: “It all started with Kahn and Salihamidzic. It started a bit there, with big salaries being paid and long contracts being signed.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR BAYERN?

With growing internal and external pressure, Bayern may officially part ways with Eberl in the coming months. If Basler's sources are right, Krosche could step in before long. All eyes will be on Bayern’s next moves in the transfer market and whether the club finally regain control of their sporting vision.

Revealed: How Newcastle decision left Alexander Isak 'furious' and led to striker's transfer bombshell

Alexander Isak's reasons for wanting to leave Liverpool have now been revealed amid interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Isak has asked to leave Newcastle this summerAngered after club went back on contract promiseStill a target of big-spenders LiverpoolFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The Sweden international has rocked Newcastle by informing the club he wants to leave. According to the Daily Mail, the decision stems from Newcastle reneging on the promise of a new contract last summer. Isak was reassured by former co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi in March 2024 that a new and improved deal was in the works but it did not materialise. The duo left the club four months later which saw Paul Mitchell appointed as sporting director. Mitchell saw that Isak was already one of Newcastle's top earners, and still had four years left on his contract, and was unwilling to offer the terms Isak wanted. The decision is said to have left Isak "furious" with the club.

Isak's anger stems from the fact he reportedly believes he is being paid "well below market value," but he also wants to see the club's Saudi owners to show more ambition and invest in new signings and better facilities to help the team progress. The 25-year-old's goals last season helped Newcastle end a long trophy drought to win the League Cup and also secure Champions League football for next season. However, the club have gone on to endure a difficult transfer market, missing out on top targets such as Joao Pedri, Bruan Mbeumo and James Trafford.

Liverpool could now move for Isak despite spending heavily this summer already. The Reds have splashed out on Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike but could still go for the Swede. Meanwhile, Newcastle are thought to be considering Benjamin Sesko as a potential replacement for Isak if he does leave.

Isak has stayed at home while Newcastle have jetted out on a pre-season tour of Asia. Team-mate Bruno Guimaraes has made it clear he hopes Isak stays at Newcastle but the Magpies appear to be facing a real battle to hold onto their star man this summer.
