–Fixtures | Squads | Points table | Tournament IndexTop Story: Bangladesh trump Sri Lanka amid timed-out drama in DelhiYet another chapter was written into the story of subcontinental cricket’s most engrossing rivalry, in which Bangladesh came away deserved winners against Sri Lanka, winning by three wickets and, crucially, 53 deliveries in Delhi. The margin of victory means Bangladesh have leapfrogged Sri Lanka on the points table on net run rate, while Bangladesh, Netherlands and Sri Lanka are all on four points and all three – and England – are still vying for the two remaining spots at the 2025 Champions Trophy. This, though, was a game where a solitary incident overshadowed all else. The now customary controversy associated with the “Naagin Derby” was this time a historic first, as Angelo Mathews was dismissed timed out – the first instance of the rare dismissal in international cricket.Click here for the full reportExplainer: The Mathews timed out – what happened Angelo Mathews argues with the umpires after being timed out•AFP/Getty ImagesAngelo Mathews became the first player ever to be timed out in international cricket after a helmet malfunction in Sri Lanka’s World Cup group match against Bangladesh in Delhi, adding further drama to a rivalry not short of it.Mathews was already on the pitch and in his final preparations before taking strike against Shakib Al Hasan. His helmet strap broke just as he was tightening it around his chin. He called for a replacement helmet, which was run out to him by Chamika Karunaratne. Kumble: Spin can trouble Australia at Wankhede

There was a time when facing Afghanistan in a World Cup held no fears for Australia. The five-time World Champions have been nothing short of ruthless in the two previous ODI World Cup meetings. In 2015, in Perth, Australia piled up 417 for 6 with David Warner cracking 178, on their way to a 275-run win. In 2019, in Bristol, Australia romped home to a seven-wicket win with 91 balls to spare having bowled Afghanistan out for 207 before Warner again made 89 not out.But there is no chance the 2023 Australians are heading to the Wankhede Stadium assuming they will win again at a canter. Afghanistan poses an enormous threat, despite Australia’s five-game winning streak. Afghanistan have won three in a row themselves and have already taken down England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands as they push for a maiden semi-final berth.Full previewTeam newsAfghanistan (probable): 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 2 Ibrahim Zadran, 3 Rahmat Shah, 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), 5 Azmatullah Omarzai, 6 Ikram Alikhil (wk), 7 Mohammad Nabi, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10 Naveen-ul-Haq/Noor Ahmad, 11 Fazalhaq FarooqiAustralia (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Travis Head, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Steven Smith/Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Josh Inglis (wk), 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Marcus Stoinis, 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodFeature: Maxwell prepares to take on Afghanistan’s spinnersGlenn Maxwell is standing diagonally behind the Australia team nets. And the way he is holding his pose only a few steps away from the nets with a dead-pan straight face, it would seem as if he is barred from batting and has been punished further by watching his team-mates smother the ball in the nets, especially given the amount of runs that could again be on offer at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

Tom Curran death heroics snatch last-gasp tie for Oval Invincibles

Tom Curran smashed an unbeaten 38 from 18 balls as Oval Invincibles snatched a tie against Welsh Fire in a final-ball thriller in front of 21,432 fans at the Kia Oval.Curran, who hit four sixes, needed three from the last ball and drove David Payne to deep square-leg, racing back for the second to beat the fielder’s throw by the barest of all margins as the scores finished level at 138. Jordan Cox had scored 51 from 43 balls before Fire struck back in the contest with Ben Green taking two wickets to reduce the hosts to 100 for 6.Joe Clarke top-scored for the visitors with 69 from 46 balls while Invincibles quick Gus Atkinson provided further evidence of his growing reputation with 3 for 26.After winning the toss and having chosen to bat, Welsh Fire got off to a fast start as Clarke and Luke Wells put on 32 from 15 balls. But Atkinson began to turn the tide with three wickets from his first ten balls, including Fire captain Tom Abell, who was caught behind for a duck, as the score slipped to 43 for 4.David Willey helped Clarke launch a recovery before he fell to Zak Chappell for 13, that being the only reward for the seamer who conceded only 15 from his 20 balls.Green gave Clarke strong support with 25 off 16 balls including two sixes. Clarke’s excellent partnership with Green continued as he reached his half-century from 39 balls by thumping Chappell to the cover boundary.Tom Curran, who took 2 for 27, ended the partnership of 58 from 36 balls as Green was caught at deep midwicket as Fire recovered well to finish the innings on 138 for 6.Fire struck with the first ball of the home side’s reply with Jason Roy caught at gully off Shaheen Shah Afridi. The visitors might have also removed Will Jacks early on when he swung Willey to deep square leg but Green fumbled the chance as the ball went over the boundary for four.Cox cut Willey for four having already driven Afridi twice to the cover fence and continued to thrive in the powerplay as he lifted David Payne over midwicket for a maximum.Payne thought he had taken revenge later in the set when Cox appeared to be caught at third by Glenn Phillips but a decision review showed that the ball bounced first. Cox almost had another close call soon afterwards edging Haris Rauf just past the diving Clarke for four.Cox dominated the partnership of 58 from 39 balls which ended as Jacks was caught at long-off with Green making amends for his earlier mistake.Having reached his half century from 39 balls, Cox could only add one more before he was brilliantly caught by Green on the boundary, as the fielder palmed the ball back and kept his balance to complete the catch.Green then took two wickets in five balls with Sam Curran and Heinrich Klaasen both caught in the deep to put pressure back on the home side. With Oval needing 13 from five, Curran smashed a huge six off Payne that flew out of the stadium, before his final-ball athleticism snatched a tie.

Lauren Filer backed to give England 'wicket-taking' edge

Heather Knight hopes Dukes ball will aid England’s quest for 20 wickets

Valkerie Baynes21-Jun-2023She brings an element of the unknown to the opposition, but it was Lauren Filer’s abilities as an impact bowler that have earned her an international debut for England in the Women’s Ashes Test. With nearly 15,000 people set to attend over the course of the five-day contest against Australia at Trent Bridge, this is some stage for Filer, who beat another young but more experienced quick in Issy Wong for a place in the side. But Heather Knight, England’s captain, expressed plenty of faith in Filer on match eve.”It’s hugely exciting for her,” Knight said. “We’ve gone for her because we think she’s a real impact bowler. I guess she’s a bit of an unknown but she bowls wicket-taking deliveries and for me she’s, if not the quickest, one of the quickest in the country. She gets bounce, and she’s got skills, moves the ball both ways, and ultimately we need a team that’s going to take 20 wickets and we feel like she gives us that. She can bang the ball in as well, there’s not too many people queueing up to face her in the nets. I’m really excited for her to see how she goes.”Related

Filer has taken eight wickets for Western Storm from four matches in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy so far this year at an average of 28. 62 and she took five wickets from as many matches in the Charlotte Edwards Cup at 24.80. Last season she claimed 11 wickets at 22.63 in the RHFT and one wicket in two Charlotte Edwards Cup appearances. On the flipside of the career spectrum, Danni Wyatt will make her Test debut after 245 white-ball games for her country. Wyatt adds firepower to an England top seven all capable of scoring quick runs.”I think probably at one point Danni probably felt like she was never going to get a Test cap,” Knight said. “We picked her because we want her to play exactly how she does in the middle order in ODI cricket. She’s one of the best players, and the best attackers, of spin in the world game for me and she makes it very tricky to set fields, she scores in quite unusual areas. That’s exactly how I want her to play, how she does in white-ball cricket, have a little bit of a counter-punch and use her experience there as well.”Knight hadn’t spoken to men’s counterpart Ben Stokes since his side lost their opening Ashes Test to Australia by two-wickets in a last-evening thriller at Edgbaston on Tuesday. But she has picked the brains of seam spearhead and Nottinghamshire native Stuart Broad in the build-up to this game.”I’ve spoken to Stuart about the conditions, he’s played a lot of cricket here and this is my first ever game at Trent Bridge,” Knight said. “Lots of really useful stuff on how to bowl on this pitch, how the pitch changes over the course of the cricket that he’s played here.”Danni Wyatt prepares to make her Test debut after 245 appearances for England•ECB via Getty ImagesThe pitch was showing patches of green grass 24 hours out from the toss, which had given Knight more to think about ahead of the clash which carries four points for a win to kick off the multi-format series. The last time these sides met in a Test, 18 months ago over four days at Canberra’s Manuka Oval in the middle of the series, it ended in a nail-biting draw.”It’s probably a little bit patchier than I expected and probably the groundsman wanted it,” she said. “Actually we asked for a pitch with just good carry. The Canberra wicket was awesome for women’s Test-match cricket, a bit of pace, the bowlers could get a bit out of it but you could also score runs if the bowler missed. So we wanted a similar wicket to that, but generally it’s a pretty good wicket to bat on and I look forward to getting out there.”In terms of the pitch, you want a nick to carry because sometimes we’ve played on softer, duller pitches where actually it’s really hard to score runs if you bowl straight but also really hard to take wickets and that’s not really the pitches, we don’t have as much pace in the women’s game that’s conducive to get a result. The Dukes ball is a really great addition. The bowlers have certainly enjoyed bowling with it and you can get a little bit out of it for a lot longer. Probably the biggest challenge in Women’s Tests has been taking 20 wickets and I think the Dukes will help that.”All of England Women’s recognised batters have scored runs in the lead-up to this match, most notably opener Tammy Beaumont, who retired on 201 not out off 238 balls against Australia A in a three-day warm-up on a lifeless Derby pitch last week, where Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Sophia Dunkley and Amy Jones all reached the 70s and 80s.”The tempo that we went at and the pace we scored at was brilliant without being overly risky and aggressive, that was awesome,” Knight said. “We want to go on and make real match-defining innings, not just get a hundred if you can get a real big one. That puts the team in a great position. I’m really happy with the group and hopefully we can go out and replicate some of that in the next five days.”

Pakistan players awaiting clearance on MLC participation

A handful of Pakistan players are waiting to hear if they will be permitted to play in the inaugural season of Major League Cricket in the United States in July.Imad Wasim and Azam Khan – who do not hold central contracts with the PCB – have agreed deals in principle to play for Seattle Orcas, whose backers include GMR Group, the co-owners of Delhi Capitals. Two other players, who are national team regulars in both white-ball formats and are centrally contracted, have also been in talks with another franchise but are waiting to hear from the PCB whether they will be granted No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to play in the tournament.ESPNcricinfo understands that MLC’s organisers have been in talks with the PCB in recent weeks to discuss the potential participation of Pakistan players. The PCB are thought to be evaluating the league and exploring the specific terms and conditions upon which NOCs may be granted. There are some suggestions that the PCB could ask for a fee in the region of USD$25,000 in exchange for an NOC. There is some anxiety from league organisers as to whether Pakistan players will be granted visas, though that is not believed to be a serious obstacle.Related

A more pressing obstacle to their potential participation will be the nature and, indeed, fate of Pakistan’s July commitment in Sri Lanka. That series is currently a two-Test World Test Championship series which overlaps with MLC – the league takes place from July 13-30 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. There is speculation that series may turn into an ODI series as preparation for the World Cup. If so the two centrally contracted players will likely not be able to play in the US as they would be required to appear for Pakistan.Any appearance by Pakistani players would be significant because they have missed out on the two other big leagues launched in the UAE and South Africa, both with significant IPL franchise ownership. The ostensible reason for their absence from the ILT20 and the SA20 was because of a busy international home season for their top players. But there were also suggestions at the time that IPL franchise owners were reluctant to pick Pakistani players because of strained political ties between India and Pakistan – Pakistani players have not featured in the IPL since the inaugural season.Four of the six MLC franchises have investors who own or co-own IPL teams, while Cricket Victoria and Cricket New South Wales have stakes in the other two. Each franchise has a salary cap of $1.15 million and several leading international players – including Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje – have signed deals worth up to $175,000.Each team will only play five group games in the inaugural season, though MLC is likely to expand in future years.

Fabrizio Romano: Arsenal have "underrated" Sesko alternative if talks fail

Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Arsenal and their plans to sign a new striker, amid their widely reported talks for RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko.

Arsenal hold talks over signing Benjamin Sesko

Near the end of May, it became evident through reliable media sources that Sesko had emerged as Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta’s prime striker target.

David Ornstein: Arsenal consider deal for player as "done and signed"

Gunners chiefs are extremely confident.

Arsenal entered “concrete” negotiations with Leipzig over a deal for the Slovenia international, who’s fresh off the back of a productive campaign where he scored 21 goals and six assists in all competitions.

Since then, talks have been ongoing and advancing cautiously (Fabrizio Romano), with reliable journalist Ben Jacobs sharing that the major sticking point in this potential transfer is Leipzig’s financial demands.

According to his information, Arsenal want to strike a deal for Sesko at around £60 million, whereas Leipzig want to sell for nearer £70 million.

“They have discussed whether or not there is flexibility beneath the variable release clause, set at the moment around €80 million,” said Jacobs on The Football Terrace last week.

“That’s why that one’s taking time, because Arsenal want to do Sesko for €70 million, or within that ballpark.”

Sesko is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, even if his priority is to stay in Europe (The Telegraph), but so far, no middle ground appears to have been found on the final price, despite some reports that the 22-year-old has already agreed personal terms.

If they cannot reach an agreement with Leipzig over Sesko, Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres apparently remains on their radar as an alternative.

Viktor Gyokeres on Arsenal list if Benjamin Sesko talks fail

That is according to Romano, who reports in his GiveMeSport newsletter that Gyokeres is on Arsenal’s target list in case talks for Sesko fall through.

“It’s an open race for Gyokeres,” said Romano.

“He remains on Arsenal list in case Sesko deal doesn’t happen, Man United have called his agents again over the weekend.”

The “underrated” and “exciting” 26-year-old bagged an incredible 54 goals and 13 assists last season, spearheading Sporting to their first domestic double win in 20 years, but it is worth noting that he might not be much cheaper than Sesko.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas poured cold water over reports that Gyokeres and the club have an agreement that he can leave for £59 million this summer, telling the Portuguese press that he will indeed cost more.

“I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60m euros plus 10m euros because I never promised that,” Varandas said.

“To this day Sporting has not had an offer for Gyokeres – neither today nor last season.”

Sporting Club's Viktor Gyokeres.

While this comes as a statement which Arsenal need to be aware of, Varandas does guarantee that Gyokeres will leave for less than his £84 million release clause.

“One of the agent’s biggest concerns was whether we would demand the termination clause,” said Varandas.

“He wanted to guarantee certain things. And what was agreed? That Sporting would not demand a release clause now. For one reason: he was going to be 27 years old, and no player leaves Portugal at 27 for 100m euros or 90m euros.”

Arsenal enter race to sign £25m Sesko alternative who's "like Haaland"

da jogodeouro: It might seem overly simple, but if there is one thing Arsenal need to add to the squad this summer, it’s goals.

da betway: Mikel Arteta’s side are well known for being one of the hardest teams to break down in world football – and the data shows it – but time and time again this season, the North Londoners found it hard to put the ball in the back of the net when it really mattered.

So, while the addition of Martin Zubimendi will be a great one – when it eventually happens – the club need to do a lot more and strengthen the frontline.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetain the stands before the match

Fortunately, reports have now linked the Gunners with another option to lead the line next season, someone who could be a great alternative to Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal's striker search

Arsenal’s hunt for a new number nine has been ongoing for over a year now, and over the last few weeks, Sesko and Gyokeres have been constantly linked.

The former was a target last summer, again in the winter, and now, for the third window on the bounce, he has been dominating the talk around the club, with reports suggesting he could cost at least £67m.

The situation is even more unclear regarding the Swedish international, as while he supposedly rejected Manchester United in favour of the Gunners, reports from late last week claimed that Sporting CP’s demands had seen the North Londoners ‘freeze’ their interest in the 27-year-old.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

So, it looks like the Gunners might need to seek out an alternative, which could help explain the links to Dušan Vlahović.

Yes, according to a recent report from TuttoJuve, Arsenal are now in the picture for the Juventus marksman.

The report has revealed that in light of Sporting wanting at least €80m – £68m – for Gyokeres, Arteta and Co are now ‘evaluating valid alternatives,’ one of which is the Serbian international.

No price is mentioned in the report, but stories from last month claimed that the 25-year-old goalscorer could be available for just £25m, which could make him an ideal alternative to Sesko and Gyokeres.

Why Vlahović could be a great alternative to Sesko and Gyokeres

Okay, so the first thing to say is that one of the advantages to signing Vlahović over Gyokeres and Sesko is that he’d cost substantially less and, therefore, free up more money to spend elsewhere.

Juventus' DusanVlahovicin action with Empoli's Saba Goglichidze

However, while you would expect someone who could cost less than half as much as the Leipzig star, for example, would be significantly less effective, that is not the case.

When it comes to raw output, he’s only marginally worse than the Slovenian star, who is playing in a top-five league and, therefore, at a similar level.

Moreover, while he is miles off the Sporting star, it’s important to note that research from Opta Analyst found that 11 of 18 teams in the Portuguese top-flight are League One standard.

That brings us to one of the significant benefits of signing the Serb, who former Juventus striker Darko Kovacevic once said is “just like Haaland”, over the other two: his vast experience at the highest level.

For example, across his career to date, the Belgrade-born monster has made 202 appearances in Serie A.

In comparison, the former RB Salzburg gem has made just 64 appearances in the Bundesliga, while the Stockholm-born poacher has never played a minute of football in a top-five league.

Juventus' DusanVlahovicduring the warm up

Ultimately, Vlahović probably wouldn’t be the most exciting addition Arsenal could make to the frontline this season, but he has a proven track record in a tough league, is almost as effective as Sesko and would cost a fraction as much.

Therefore, if the Gunners cannot get their hands on either the Leipzig star or Gyokeres this summer, then the Juventus ace would be a great alternative.
