Liverpool "clearly ahead" of Chelsea in race to sign "magnificent" £60m ace

da betcris: Liverpool are “clearly ahead” of rivals Chelsea in the race to sign a “magnificent” player in the summer transfer window.

Kerkez to join Liverpool this week

da supremo: The Reds have now officially signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a British-record £116m move, in a piece of business that has made the rest of Europe sit up and take notice.

There is unlikely to be a bigger signing made this summer, with Wirtz considered one of the world’s top attacking players, but Liverpool are not expected to be done there, still planning on adding fresh faces to the squad.

Florian Wirtz

It looks as though Milos Kerkez will be the next name through the door at Anfield in the coming days, with journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming over the weekend that a minor issue has been ironed out and that he could be unveiled as soon as Tuesday.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has gone one better, however, saying that a medical is now expected to be done on Monday after flying into the UK, with the deal set to be worth £40m for the Bournemouth left-back.

Liverpool leading race to sign "magnificent" ace

Now, reliable Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri [via Sport Witness] has said that Liverpool are “clearly ahead” of Chelsea and others in the battle to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana this summer.

He states that the Reds’ head of recruitment, Barry Hunter, admires the 20-year-old and has him at the top of his list of summer targets. The Premier League champions will need to sell Federico Chiesa first, though, and Fofana could possibly cost as much as £60m.

Lyon's Malick Fofana

Fofana could be a brilliant long-term signing for Liverpool, with scout Jacek Kulig describing him as a “magnificent” prospect last year.

At just 20 years of age, the young Belgian has already bagged 22 goal contributions (15 goals and seven assists) in 62 appearances for Lyon, also winning one cap for Belgium at senior level, and those numbers should only improve as he matures as a player.

Predominantly a left-sided attacking player, it seems slightly strange that Liverpool would push so hard for Fofana, though, especially as Chiesa is right-sided in general.

Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo appear to be staying put, so it would arguably only make sense for the Reds to sign the Lyon ace if one of them moves on, or if Arne Slot sees him as a backup option to Mohamed Salah on the right. But his talent is undeniable, so the idea of him in a Liverpool shirt is exciting.

Vinicius Jr to receive world-record bid as Saudi Arabian side aim to capitalise on breakdown in Real Madrid contract talks with blockbuster transfer that would top Neymar's €222m PSG move

Al-Ahli are preparing a massive transfer offer for Vinicius Jr amid ongoing concerns regarding his contract extension at Real Madrid.

  • Vini Jr. demands to be the highest-paid player at Madrid
  • Club not willing to entertain Brazilian's demands

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Saudi Pro League chiefs have been interested in signing the Brazilian forward for a long time and are keeping tabs on the growing tensions between Los Blancos and Vinicius. According to , the Saudi officials have lined up a record €300 million (£261m/$351m) bid for the Madrid forward in case of a fallout between Vinicius and the club. Furthermore, the Saudi Arabian side are willing to offer €1bn (£870m/$1.2bn) over a five-year contract to the two-time Champions League winner.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Saudi chiefs were left disappointed earlier when Kylian Mbappe declined their massive €300m (£261m/$351m) bid in 2023. There is an internal feeling that another prominent player needs to be signed for the Saudi League, and with Al-Ahli winning the Asian Champions League last season, the plan is for the Jeddah-based club to get their deserved big signing. However, Vinicius has publicly stated that he wishes to continue with Madrid, but his demand to be the highest-paid at the club raises uncertainty about his future. The Saudis know that a deal will be hard to make but are optimistic that if not now, a deal can be struck later, possibly by the 2027-28 season, when the Brazilian will still be in his prime years.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Madrid's talks to extend Vinicius Jr.'s contract until 2030 have stalled. With two years left on his current deal, the Brazilian forward is demanding a hefty €30m (£26m/$35m), including a renewal bonus, which would make him the club's highest-paid player. Los Blancos, however, are reluctant to meet this demand, particularly given his recent dip in form, notably in the Club World Cup where he struggled.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MADRID?

Xabi Alonso's side are currently lobbying La Liga to postpone their opening fixture against Osasuna. La Liga's president, Javier Tebas, had declined the club's request but is under new pressure to reschedule the season opener after AFE (Spanish Footballers' Association) appealed to the Sole Competition Judge.

Perez willing to sell: Man City now in talks with "special" Real Madrid ace

As Real Madrid president Florentino Perez looks to make room for even more stars this summer, Manchester City could reportedly take full advantage by welcoming an attacking talent of their own.

Man City "a thousand million points behind Liverpool" – Guardiola

It was around this time last year that Manchester City were on their way to securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title before squaring off against Manchester United in the FA Cup final. On a Wembley outing which ultimately ended in defeat, Pep Guardiola’s side could have been forgiven for their title hangover which allowed United to take full advantage.

A year on, however, they will not be handed that same forgiveness if they fall to defeat against Crystal Palace this weekend. The Citizens are no longer champions. It’s Liverpool’s crown to lose these days. Instead, Guardiola has endured his most difficult season in the Manchester City dugout and is yet to secure Champions League qualification with just two games remaining.

Guardiola even went as far as to admit that victory in the FA Cup final would not suddenly turn City’s season into a success, telling reporters: “The damage would be minimum. It’s not going to confuse [that] the season has been good. The club has to take the decision, the right ones, so next season will be better.

“We are a thousand million points behind Liverpool. I said many times the season hasn’t been good because we define if the season is good or not with the Premier League. This season it could not happen, at the same time we tried to avoid the damage. We have to be calm now and recover.”

Perfect Reijnders alternative: Man City preparing bid for "magic" £60m star

ByJoe Nuttall May 14, 2025

However, what such a difficult campaign has seemingly done is spark Manchester City into life in the transfer market. Already, names such as Florian Wirtz are threatening to steal the headlines and he could yet be joined by a Real Madrid star at The Etihad.

Man City in direct contact with Rodrygo

According to Sport in Spain, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City are now in direct contact with Rodrygo over a summer move. The Real Madrid winger is someone that Perez is reportedly willing to sell for the right price, whilst the Brazilian himself has grown discontent with his role towards the end of Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure.

It’s not often that Madrid lose a Galactico, but as Rodrygo looks to become the main man, the Spaniards could do just that if Manchester City make their move in the coming months.

With 13 goals and 10 assists to his name this season, the Brazilian winger has impressed once again under Ancelotti, who has been a fan of his for some time despite the winger’s reported discontent.

The Real Madrid boss told reporters in 2022: “Both Valverde and Rodrygo are special players. And that’s what modern-day footballers have to be. They can play in different positions and they possess both technical and physical attributes.”

Tanzim fined 15% of match fee for altercation with Paudel

Bangladesh fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib has been fined 15% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct after an altercation with Nepal captain Rohit Paudel during the teams’ meeting in Kingstown on June 16.The incident took place just after the end of the third over of Nepal’s innings, when Tanzim, after bowling a delivery, “walked towards Nepal batter Rohit Paudel in an aggressive manner and made inappropriate physical contact”, according to an ICC release. There were a few words exchanged between the two players followed by plenty of hand gesturing, with the on-field umpire Sam Nogajski having to separate the two. The umpires were also seen having a word with Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto after the incident.Tanzim was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match”.

In addition, one demerit point was added to Tanzim’s disciplinary record. This was his first offence in a 24-month period. When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and the player is banned. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player. There was no need for a formal hearing as Tanzim accepted the sanction, which was proposed by match referee Richie Richardson. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Nogajski, along with third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena.Paudel had downplayed the incident after the game. “There’s nothing between us. Just he came and he told me to hit. And I said, go and bowl. Nothing else,” he said.Tanzim, with his spell of 4 for 7, derailed Nepal in the chase of 106; they eventually fell short by 21 runs. It was the lowest total any team had defended successfully at the T20 World Cup. Tanzim is currently the joint second-highest wicket-taker in this World Cup, with nine wickets in four games, at an economy of only 4.80. Having progressed to the Super Eight at the World Cup, Bangladesh next play Australia on June 21.

Rangers must ruthlessly axe "sloppy" Ibrox flop who wouldn't suit Gerrard

Glasgow Rangers extended their winless run to six matches in all competitions after they held their Glasgow rivals to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Barry Ferguson has failed to lead the team to a win since the dramatic 4-3 victory over Dundee away from home at the end of March, and has not done his chances of landing the job on a permanent basis many favours.

The Light Blues decided to move on from Philippe Clement earlier this year and will have to source a long-term replacement for him this summer, with a familiar name leading the list of candidates.

The latest on the Rangers managerial chase

Football Insider recently reported that former Rangers head coach Steven Gerrard is the leading candidate to secure the job on a full-time basis ahead of next season.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

The outlet claimed that the English manager is the favourite for the role, ahead of Marco Rose, and that he is at the top of the club’s shortlist of options.

Nathan Patterson, Steven Gerrard

The 44-year-old boss usually deployed a 4-3-3 system during his first spell at Ibrox, which yielded an incredible, unbeaten, league title success in the 2020/21 campaign, and that could mean that the Gers need to recruit in a certain way to suit that system this summer.

It could also mean that there are some players currently in the Rangers squad who could move on from Glasgow because they do not fit what Gerrard would want in that position, and Danilo is a player who could fall into that category.

Why Danilo may not suit Gerrard

The Brazilian forward, who joined from Feyenoord in the summer of 2023, may not be ideally suited to Gerrard’s set-up because he has not shown himself to be suited to playing as a lone centre-forward.

Danilo has been used as a second-striker, or attacking midfielder, or as a centre-forward as part of a front two, either alongside Cyriel Dessers or Hamza Igamane, rather than being relied upon to play on his own.

That may be because the 5 foot 9 forward lacks the physicality to play as a sole number nine. He has lost 63% of his ground duels and 75% of his aerial battles in the Premiership so far this season, which shows that opposition defenders find it too easy to get the better of him.

The 26-year-old dud is reportedly on a wage of £26k-per-week, which is more than Mohammed Diomande (£12k-per-week), who provided the assist for Dessers on Sunday, and Nicolas Raskin (£19k-per-week), despite the duo being regular starters in midfield with 55 league starts between them this season.

Meanwhile, Danilo, who was described as being “sloppy” on the ball by pundit Steven Thompson, has started seven league matches this term and has struggled with multiple injuries during his two seasons at Ibrox so far.

As you can see in the table above, the former Feyenoord marksman has missed 53 games through injury for Rangers since his move to the club in 2023, which shows that he is not reliable in terms of his availability.

Therefore, Rangers should ruthlessly cash in on Danilo in the summer transfer window because he does not have the physicality to suit playing on his own up front in a Gerrard system and does not have the availability to make him a worthwhile squad member, particularly with a wage that is higher than club Player of the Year Raskin and Diomande’s.

Willey blitz helps Northamptonshire cruise to first Trent Bridge win

Zaib, Scrimshaw scuttle Notts before visiting captain leads charge to small target

Skipper David Willey smashed seven sixes and seven fours in a 34-ball 79 as Northamptonshire Steelbacks made it two Vitality Blast wins from two with a crushing eight-wicket win over Notts Outlaws. After bowling Outlaws out for 154, Steelbacks knocked off their target with a commanding 40 balls to spare, South African opener Matthew Breetzke hitting the winning boundary in a 30-ball unbeaten 51. Northamptonshire had never won at Trent Bridge in seven previous visits in the shortest format.Outlaws had appeared set for a substantial score after building on a 63-run powerplay to be 104 for 1 after 10 overs, new skipper Joe Clarke and Outlaws debutant Jack Haynes having shared a 95-run partnership from 58 balls. But Clarke fell for 48 and Haynes for 51 and the home side lost their last nine wickets for 50 in 9.2 overs.Left-arm spinner Saif Zaib – only an occasional bowler in this format – took a T20 career-best 3 for 12 in three overs, with 6ft 7ins pace bowler George Scrimshaw claiming three for 16 from 14 balls.Asked to bat first, Outlaws lost Alex Hales in the second over, caught behind after making room to cut Raphy Weatherall, but raced to 63 for 1 in the opening six nonetheless, Clarke hammering two sixes and Haynes another amid a rush of boundaries. The second-wicket pair had added 95 by the end of the 10th over before they were stopped in their tracks by left-arm spinner Saif Zaib – the seventh bowler used by David Willey – as Clarke was caught by off-side sweeper Ricardo Vasconcelos for 48 off 30 balls.A brilliant piece of fielding by Willey from mid-off then ran out Will Young and when Tom Moores holed out to long-on for 9 Outlaws had stumbled from 104 for 1 to 117 for 4 in three overs, with the scoring rate being dragged back for good measure by the slower bowlers. The Northamptonshire fightback continued with Zaib striking twice in his second over as Haynes was caught at wide long-on and Matt Montgomery was bowled sweeping.Willey re-entered the attack to bowl Calvin Harrison off an inside edge before the unravelling continued thanks to two in two by George Scrimshaw as Lyndon James was out via a steepling catch and Dillon Pennington leg before. Scrimshaw wrapped things up by having Olly Stone caught behind as Outlaws failed even to bat out the full 20 overs. The early wicket of Vasconcelos, caught at slip as a scoop went badly wrong, lifted home spirits momentarily but they had fallen flat by the end of the powerplay, with Steelbacks ahead at 68 for 1 after the sixth over saw Willey hammer his one-time Northamptonshire team-mate Stone for 4-4-6-4-4-1, before going 6-2-4 off legspinner Harrison’s first three deliveries to complete a 21-ball fifty.Willey’s explosive innings continued with four more huge sixes off the first four balls of Harrison’s second over. The left-hander clearly had it in mind to go for a full set but his luck ran out next ball, which he mistimed just enough for it to drop into the hands of James at long-off.Nonetheless, with opener Breetzke, who faced only 20 balls in the opening 10 overs, at last getting a look-in to clear the rope off Stone, Steelbacks reached the halfway point needing just 35 more for victory. As it was, it took them only another 20 balls to get the job done, Breetzke and Ravi Bopara picking up two more maximums each before the former lofted Montgomery’s offspin through long-off for the winning boundary, completing his maiden Outlaws half-century in the process.

'Same old West Indies' and their same old mistakes

The second ODI between West Indies and India went quickly from being a contest to the familiar sight of the team from the Caribbean imploding

Aishwarya Kumar in Port of Spain12-Aug-2019One minute, the stadium was abuzz with chatter. West Indies were very much in the game – their death bowling had limited India to under 300 and with Nicholas Pooran and Roston Chase in the middle, they looked like they had it under control. Then wickets fell like a pack of cards. Pooran. Chase. Carlos Brathwaite. Kemar Roach. The crowd started to clear. It was an all too familiar feeling. It was an all too familiar sight. West Indies are almost always close, but somehow, almost always short.”They say in the islands that the West Indies know how to lose,” Gerald Ramkissoon, former chief curator and current maintenance head at Queen’s Park Oval said. “Same old, same old West Indies,” was the take of Ian Ramsey, part of the pitch staff at Queens Park Oval. The team has been struggling for a while – they last won a bilateral ODI series in 2014, against Bangladesh. But experts and fans had renewed hope before the World Cup, particularly given a drawn series against England leading up to the event. The general perception was that the squad had the tools – with their deep and exciting batting line-up and the in-form pace attack – needed to succeed. Now, it was all about execution. That’s exactly where they failed, close to winning several matches but not going over the line. They were 15 runs short in their run chase against Australia, a heart-breaking five against New Zealand, and 23 against Sri Lanka. Those three results going their way could have meant a semi-final spot for the team.”Again, we were in front today and then we found a way to give away our wickets, so it’s just a matter of us now learning from our mistakes and trying to dig deeper,” West Indies coach Floyd Reifer said after the defeat to India in the second ODI, which put them 1-0 behind in the three-match series with one game to go.Captain Jason Holder has been saying that their main batting focus is taking time with the new ball, understanding the conditions, and then scoring runs at a steady pace. But that approach runs contrary to how many West Indies batsmen usually play – the slam-bang T20 style. And that’s the style that has resulted in the batsmen, particularly the middle order, making careless shot choices.Ramkissoon reminisced about the time when West Indies had someone like Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whom bowlers would spend hours trying to dislodge.”T20, especially CPL, Big Bash and IPL changed everything,” Ramkissoon said. “Don’t get me wrong, the current team, Pooran, (Evin) Lewis and (Shimron) Hetmyer, they have the ability and the game to take West Indies far, but it’s about how you approach cricket, how you play the game.”Both Ramkissoon and Ramsey feel that the relative lack of experience in the line-up is crucial. “(Kieron) Pollard should have been in this series. He played in the IPL, he knows how most of the Indian players work, he was in good form – he would have helped players on the field, bowled and batted, we call him the triple threat in Trinidad,” Ramkissoon said. With Gayle’s looming retirement, there is also the gaping hole that is West Indies’ opening spot. Evin Lewis seems more or less set at the top, but without a solid partner, West Indies will struggle to build the foundation that Holder is keen on.These are just some among a number of issues West Indies need to address sooner rather than later. After all, among the fans, the cricket public, and even the local press, there is continuing hope for the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s to return one day. If it is within reach, as some feel, the players need to do what they can to grab it.

Kohli leaves South Africa, likely to be back for first Test

Virat Kohli has left South Africa for personal reasons, but is likely to rejoin the Test squad ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. Kohli didn’t take part in the Indians’ three-day intra-squad match, the only red-ball outing for a number of senior players including captain Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, ahead of the two-Test series.Ruturaj Gaikwad, meanwhile, has been ruled out of the two-Test series because of a finger injury. Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is currently part of the India A squad that is on a shadow tour of South Africa, has been named* as Gaikwad’s replacement as the reserve opener. Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal are likely to continue their partnership at the top of the order, like they did in the Caribbean in July-August, which was India’s most recent Test assignment.Abhimanyu struck an unbeaten 61 on the second day of the practice game in Pretoria before he was retired by the team management. Abhimanyu is expected to feature for India A in the second four-day match against South Africa A, also beginning on December 26, barring any last-minute changes. He will then link up with the national squad ahead of the New Year’s Test in Cape Town.Gaikwad is expected to head back home and to the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He picked up the injury on the ring finger of his right hand while fielding during the second ODI against South Africa in Gqeberha. In his absence, India handed a debut to Rajat Patidar for the series-deciding final ODI in Paarl, which India won.India’s Test squad has been in preparation for the past four days in Pretoria under Rahul Dravid’s coaching staff. KL Rahul, India’s stand-in ODI captain, and Mukesh Kumar are expected to link up with the Test squad after a day’s rest following the ODI series. Shreyas Iyer, who was also part of the ODI mix, had been released from the squad after the first ODI to prepare for the Tests.Iyer and Rahul will be returning to Test cricket after a prolonged absence. Both of them last featured for India during the Border-Gavaskar series at home against Australia in February. Rahul, who opened in the series, lost his place after the second Test. He missed the subsequent WTC final and the Caribbean tour because of a hamstring injury. He is likely to take over wicketkeeping duties for the Tests. Iyer, too, hasn’t played a first-class game since March, and has been on a steady diet of ODI cricket following his comeback from back surgery. The upcoming series is India’s second assignment in the new WTC cycle for 2023-25. They won the first Test in the Caribbean and were denied an opportunity to win the second by rain.

Sheffield United to go back for "amazing" defender after failed January deal

Sheffield United are expected to go back in for an “amazing” defender in the summer after missing out on him in January, according to a new report.

Sheffield United on course for Premier League return

With just eight Championship games left to play this season, Sheffield United remain firmly in the race for an immediate return to the Premier League after being relegated from the top flight last year. The Blades are currently second in the table, but trail leaders Leeds United only by goal difference.

"Good news" – £25k-p/w Sheffield Utd star is set for new Bramall Lane deal

This is great news for the Blades.

ByHenry Jackson Mar 21, 2025

Meanwhile, they lead third-placed Burnley by two points and sixth-placed West Bromwich Albion by a whopping 23 points, meaning a place in the play-offs is all but guaranteed. Manager Chris Wilder, however, would, unsurprisingly, rather avoid having to play at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

Discussing the battle for automatic promotion earlier this month, Wilder, who is currently in his second spell at Bramall Lane, said: “We’re old enough and experienced enough to know we have to get our heads down and work extremely hard for every result, and I mean every result, because there are no easy games in this division.

“This is the unpredictability of the Championship. We have to concentrate 100% on ourselves, getting the job done and getting as many points as we possibly can. If it’s enough, then fabulous, and if not then we’ll have to address the next situation.”

Blades to return for Dunne

To aid with their quest for automatic promotion, in January, United tried to sign Queens Park Rangers defender and Republic of Ireland international Jimmy Dunne. They ended up pulling out of negotiations, however, due to QPR placing a £3 million price tag on the 27-year-old’s head.

Queens Park Rangers'JimmyDunnecelebrates after the match

The Blades’ pursuit of Dunne is seemingly not finished, however. Out of contract at the end of the season, according to TBR Football chief football correspondent Graeme Bailey, United are expected to come back in for him, whether they gain promotion or not.

“I am told he was very close to joining Sheffield United in the January transfer window,” Bailey told EFL Analysis. “Talks did take place but things just did not work out. Don’t be surprised if the Blades come back, but I do know a number of their Championship rivals like him a lot. I really think QPR will find it hard to keep him. He has done really well at right-back.”

Dunne, described as “amazing” by QPR manager Marti Cifuentes, has made 37 appearances in the Championship for QPR – playing at both centre-back and right-back. Not only does he rank highly in the league for many defensive actions, including tackles, aerial duels won, interceptions and blocks, he’s also scored an impressive five goals and registered two assists.
