Erling Haaland finally responds to Myles Lewis-Skelly as Man City striker reveals true meaning behind 'stay humble' message to Arsenal

Erling Haaland has finally responded to Myles Lewis-Skelly, after seeing his celebration copied, and explained his "stay humble" message to Arsenal.

Back in September 2024, during a Premier League clash between Manchester City and the Gunners at the Etihad Stadium, prolific frontman Haaland was caught on camera aiming a "stay humble" jibe in the direction of Mikel Arteta.

Earlier in the game, Haaland had bellowed "who the f*ck are you?" at Arsenal rookie Lewis-Skelly. During a return match in February, the Gunners claimed a 5-1 victory over City. Home fans at Emirates Stadium goaded Haaland, while Lewis-Skelly was on target and proceeded to break out the Norwegian striker’s iconic lotus celebration.

WHAT HAALAND SAID

The Golden Boot-winning City superstar has no issue with that, telling : "They won the game 5-1. So yeah, they got me. If he wanted to use that moment to mock me, that’s fair enough for him. Whatever he wants to do, he can do."

Haaland added on his now infamous "stay humble" dig at Arteta and Arsenal, with the enigmatic 25-year-old having no regrets: "I think it’s an important phrase, which a lot of people should use, including myself. It’s one of the most important things, as individuals, to do."

Lean Toby Roland-Jones means business again – but don't mention England just yet

Middlesex seamer is “super fit” and aiming to rekindle form that led to Test success in 2017

Andrew Miller30-Mar-2021It would be easy to mope if you were Toby Roland-Jones. Four years ago, he was the toast of the English game – a broad-shouldered seamer with classical English traits, who sealed the County Championship for Middlesex with a hat-trick in 2016, then claimed eight wickets on Test debut against South Africa at The Oval the following summer. With a deck-hitting action that could trouble well-set batsmen, and a grooved ability to bang out line and length for sessions at a time, he was a shoo-in for further honours on the 2017-18 Ashes tour, until a stress fracture of his back unleashed a run of injuries that has scarcely abated since. In the summer of 2018, Roland-Jones didn’t make it past the first month of the season – his diligent recuperation that previous winter had earned him an England Lions trip to the Caribbean, but the crack in his back was shown to have widened after he limped out of his second match of the season at Derby.Related

And though he showed signs of his best form the following year with 37 wickets at 28.21, 2020 was another write-off – a shoulder injury this time kyboshing any involvement in that season’s rejigged itinerary. But now he is back, and seemingly with a vengeance too, thanks to a rigorous off-field regime that, in the words of his Middlesex head coach, Stuart Law, has “completely changed his body shape and body composition”. At the age of 33, time is not entirely on Roland-Jones’ side if he wants to make up for the lost years of his prime. But he’s adamant that, this time, he’s given himself the best chance to succeed.”Last year did have a lot of perspective attached to it, with all the [Covid] goings on,” Roland-Jones tells ESPNcricinfo. “But given the disappointment of those recent seasons, my focus this year has been on a long-term goal, and making changes from a physical standpoint as well as a bowling standpoint, to set things up for one, two, three summers, rather than hoping to get through three games back-to-back.”Roland-Jones himself is modest about the changes he has made – and perhaps cautious too, given how much he has learned from painful experience in recent years. But when Law, a hard-bitten Aussie not given to hyperbole, states that a player has “changed the way he’s gone about doing things” and is looking “super fit”, it’s obvious that the effort is more than just a case of “training more and eating less”, as Law also (more flippantly) put it.”I’m not sure that’s the technical term for it!” Roland-Jones jokes. But either way, he hopes that this lighter load through the crease, and a reduction of strain in his action, will break the cycle of injuries that, he believes, all stem from the same initial problem.”With bowling there is a definite connective chain that goes on,” he says. “With so many pressure points, particularly in the lower back, if you’re trying to offset anything from there, it’s tricky because other areas are really going to feel that load.”In the frame that I had, for maybe the last year-and-a-half or so, my action was starting to feel a little bit jerky, and things looked like they were harder work than they needed to be.”A lot of fast bowlers can make it look effortless, no matter how much work they put in, so I’ve tried to enhance the mobility on my bowling shoulder, and lean up to create a little bit more room for the joint to regain its elasticity, which was probably getting a bit lost while I was combating so many injuries.”There’s only so much that can be read into pre-season friendlies. But Roland-Jones’ match figures of 16-6-22-2 in his first run-out against Yorkshire at Merchant Taylors’ last week hint at a bowler who is comfortable with where his game is at, without over-extending any ambitions for the sharper end of the season.

Like anyone, I have ambitions to play higher up. I was lucky enough to get a taster for that and absolutely I want to put myself back in the hat

“That first run back on grass always has a period of adjustment, of getting back to it,” he says. “But, to a man, everyone seems to have found their rhythm as it went on, so it was a really positive couple of days. The sun shone on us as well, which is always a blessing at this time of year. After spending lots of the winter in the gym and a tent, it’s so far, so good.”Roland-Jones’ upbeat demeanour isn’t solely connected to his optimism for the season ahead. In December, he and his wife Harriet had a baby boy, Rory, and so – while the rest of the country was dealing with the strictures of a winter lockdown, his main focus outside of training has been on nappies and night feeds.”It definitely offers you some good, fresh perspective,” he says. “But it’s been really enjoyable. We’ve been fortunate to have a great distraction during a tricky time for the country, and it’s enabled us to really enjoy that period of being at home and just having time together as a family. And it’s also a timely reminder of the fact that you’re a little bit older, which is always good!”Back in his day job, however, there are still a pair of ongoing reminders that Roland-Jones is not yet over the hill in sporting terms. In 2017, he was considered one of the frontrunners to take over from James Anderson and Stuart Broad, then 34 and 31 respectively, as England’s attack leader when Father Time finally caught up on their remarkable careers. Four years and several Indian summers later, they seem no closer to the ends of their respective roads, and by extension, neither need he be.”What those guys are still managing to do to further their careers is pretty inspiring,” Roland-Jones says, “and it’s a testament to all the work that goes on behind the scenes.”As for whether he might yet be able to join them in Australia this winter, and fulfil the ambition that was so cruelly denied him on the last Ashes tour, Roland-Jones is understandably coy.”I guess that’s where you’ve probably got to state the difference between goals and ambitions,” he says. “Like anyone, I have ambitions to play higher up. I was lucky enough to get a taster for that, and absolutely, I want to put myself back in the hat.”But, as someone who has been out of the fold for a little while now, you’ve got to do your grounding in the domestic game and not look too far ahead.”Because I was never dropped by England, there were certainly a few times, coming back from injury, when I felt I must be only a couple of performances away from being right back in their thoughts.”I personally didn’t find that a particularly good mindset to be in, and it possibly led to me being a little bit absent in games for Middlesex. So while the ambition is always there, that’s really not my goal for this summer – even though you know that if you put the numbers up that you think you are capable of, anything is possible.”Toby Roland-Jones races off after sealing the 2016 Championship for Middlesex•Getty ImagesIn many ways, Roland-Jones’ own career trajectory mirrors that of Middlesex as a team – the unforgettable finale at Lord’s in September 2016, when he dramatically settled a must-win encounter with Yorkshire, giving way to the misery of relegation the following summer and a succession of seasons in the doldrums.Do the glory days feel a little bit distant at times? “I guess they probably need to, to be honest,” he says. “If you’re playing any sport and crowing back to past successes, then you’re probably focusing on too many wrong pointers.”That’s not to put it in a negative light at all, but while you’re playing, you have to focus on the moment, and that’s often no further than the day’s play that you’re in.”Whether we as a team have fallen foul of that over the last few years, that’s maybe up for debate,” he adds. “But enough time has passed for the guys to look back on it as something they want to achieve again, without reflecting on it too much.”With a seam attack that features two other Test veterans in Steven Finn and Ireland’s Tim Murtagh, as well as future England prospects such as Tom Helm, Ethan Bamber and the 19-year-old Blake Cullen, Middlesex have an abundance of weapons with which to take on the new season, although Roland-Jones acknowledges that their returns haven’t always lived up to expectations in recent years.”That’s something that, as a bowling attack, we need to address,” he says. “On paper, we’ve had a great attack for a number of years and whilst many individuals have performed well over that period, I still think we can look back and say that there’s more to come from us.”And that’s not a bad thing at all, because that’s how you should be feeling going into a new season. This is a real chance for all these components to come together at the same time.”And after everything he’s been through these past few years, nobody better embodies the optimism of new beginnings.

Shan Masood: 'We want to give Saim Ayub a fair chance'

On the Mohammad Ali selection, the Pakistan captain said they “wanted someone to bowl like Aamer Jamal”

Mohammad Isam20-Aug-2024Pakistan have picked Saim Ayub as an opener for the first Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi for continuity, according to Shan Masood. The Pakistan captain also said that Pakistan were considering Muhammad Hurraira for selection but he will have to wait for his international debut.Hurraira, 22, has been a heavy scorer in domestic cricket and last month he scored 218 against a Bangladesh High Performance XI in a four-day game in Darwin. Earlier in his debut season in 2021-22, he racked up 986 runs at an average of 58, including a triple-hundred. As for Ayub, he scored 0 and 33 in his only Test so far, against Australia in January in Sydney.”We have plenty of riches in our opening batting,” Masood said. “Imam-ul-Haq isn’t in this series. We don’t limit ourselves to 17 players. We have 20-25 players who are part of our squad. We initially felt that it was our ideal chance to check Muhammad Hurraira – what he could offer the Pakistan team after doing so well in domestic cricket in the last three or four years. We rested Imam in this series. Saim, who is in good touch now, showed potential in the second innings against Australia. As a team, you have to send a message of continuity. So we will try to back the players. We want to give him a fair chance.”Related

Pakistan will also go into the series opener against Bangladesh with an all-pace attack, a rarity in their selection policy. Masood explained that the conditions in Rawalpindi influenced the combination of their side. He said they wanted Mohammad Ali in the line-up to do a similar job to Aamer Jamal who had excelled in Australia earlier this year. Ali’s 19 wickets in PSL 2024 propelled him into the limelight but he has also been a consistent performer in domestic cricket. He has 150 wickets in 41 first-class games at an average of 25.72.”Firstly, you have to look at a few factors,” Masood said. “You have to take into account Pakistan’s position in the WTC. We at least have to win the home matches. Secondly, you have to look at the ground conditions. Thirdly, we have to look at our team combination.”We considered Aamer Jamal as a weapon in Australia. When the other three fast bowlers showed discipline, Aamer Jamal used to attack. He got crucial wickets in the middle overs. He used to eliminate Australia’s tail, which usually makes the difference by scoring 80-90 runs. As Shaheen [Shah Afridi] and Naseem [Shah] will take the new ball, we wanted someone to bowl like Aamer Jamal. I think Mohammad Ali gave us the surprise element in the PSL but we have been seeing it for a long time. He hits the deck hard. He has the quality to move the ball with the seam and in the air. He has extra pace too.”Having not made the finals of the last two WTC cycles, Pakistan are hoping to buck the trend and bring cheer to their fans.”I think you want your fans and media to write good things about the team,” Masood said. “We want to play cricket that everyone enjoys watching. Obviously, it is a result-oriented business so you need to have results in mind. We were sixth and seventh before [in the WTC], but we would like to play in the final this time. We want to play finals. We have to win our home Tests. Our challenge is to play consistently and play an exciting brand of cricket.”The first Test against Bangladesh will also be Pakistan’s first under coach Jason Gillespie. Masood wanted the new staff’s approach to align with Pakistan’s strengths. “We have a different coaching staff,” he said. “They bring a different mindset and culture but we also have to look at where we have to go as a side. I think fast bowling has been Pakistan’s strength. We have six quality fast bowlers. You need 20 wickets to win a Test. That’s a non-negotiable. Our goal is to get those 20 wickets and then batters can back up the bowlers. That’s how we went into the Australia series, and that’s how we will go into this series.”

Club World Cup Stock up, Stock Down: Liam Delap impresses for Chelsea, Jamal Musiala stuns for Bayern Munich, Trent Alexander-Arnold underwhelms in Real Madrid debut

GOAL US takes a look at who impressed and who struggled in the first round of CWC group games

The opening round of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is in the books, with game one of the Group Stage across the board completed for all 32 teams. From Bayern's 10-0 smacking of Auckland City to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal holding Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw, there have been some spectacles.

Chelsea debutant Liam Delap, PSG stalwart Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Germany star Jamal Musiala all impressed in different ways, as all three clubs took three points to begin the competition.

Opposite, though, there were questionable performances, as well. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami fell flat in a scoreless draw with Egyptian side Al Ahly, and veteran forward Luis Suarez was a shadow of himself. For Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold made his long-awaited debut for Real Madrid, but it lacked flair and confidence.

Then, in what was set to be a homecoming match in front of his American fans, U.S. international Gio Reyna watched on from the bench as Borussia Dortmund drew Fluminense 0-0, going as an unused sub.

GOAL US takes looks at who's stock is up, and who's stock is down, in the first week of the CWC.

    Stock Up: Liam Delap

The new Chelsea forward came off the bench in the' 2-0 victory over LAFC and impressed in his first minutes. The 22-year-old Englishman bagged an assist on the second goal of the game, a lovely pass finished off by Enzo Fernandez.

He blended into Enzo Maresca's system brilliantly after joining the club during the brief pre-Club World Cup transfer window from Ipswich Town. In 26 minutes, the striker created two attacking chances and registered 15 touches on the ball. He completed six of eight passes in the final-third.

“It’s a really happy feeling for me. I’m so excited to be here and to play my first game, and be able to contribute is a good feeling," Delap told DAZN after the match. “The team have welcomed me really well. I have only had a few sessions here but I am excited for more."

With a brilliant cameo off the bench to begin his career with the club, there's genuine excitement about his future at Chelsea.

    Stock Down: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Oof, not the best of debuts for "Trent."

The former Liverpool ace, donning a jersey with just his first name, struggled defensively in his first showing for the club as drew Saudi side Al Hilal 1-1. As he went further up the pitch, he looked more comfortable, but defending, he looked uneasy. Yet he remained upbeat.

"An amazing day to make my debut for Real Madrid, almost what every player dreams of," he told DAZN after the match. "Incredible, I felt the support from the moment I signed for the club. Sensational. The fanbase is truly global all over the world. You feel it every single day."

As the fullback looks to acclimate to life in Spain, he'll need to focus on his defensive efforts. With two remaining games in the CWC, it's crucial that Madrid secure three points Sunday against Mexican side Pachuca.

    Stock Up: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Kvaratskhelia's club form from the 2024-25 season has carried over into this summer's competition, as the Georgia international put on an attacking clinic against Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old bagged two assists in the 4-0 victory, and absolutely carved through Diego Simeone's usually stout defense.

He dribbled each defender at least once with a sense of tenacity on the ball, while being selfless at the same time. Constantly looking to pass or set up his teammates, he had a near-perfect performance to open the tournament.

On his first assist, he drifted centrally into the box before he teed up midfielder Fabian Ruiz. On the second, he played his role in a brilliant counter-attack finished off by Vitinha.

On top of his two assists, he nearly scored a world-class effort, only to be denied by the fingertips of Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak and the crossbar.

    Stock Down: Luis Suarez

In Miami's CWD opener, Suarez had this line: 90 minutes, zero shots on target, 23 completed passes, and 82 percent passing completion. Perhaps those are the expected stats of a central defender in a system that plays out of the back, but not what you want from your starting striker.

Against Al Ahly, Suarez was a ghost, completely pushed out of the game. His knees might be tired , but the 38-year-old needs to give his all in what could be the last continental competition of his career.

"Obviously, we will always have our competitive DNA, there are times when we don't always win or things don't go the way we want, but we will try to do it in the best way possible and go compete in every game to get the best result we want," Suarez told ESPN ahead of the CWC. "Knowing the difficulty that a tournament of this nature has due to the great teams that are competing, and well knowing how difficult it is for us and trying to do it in the best way possible."

KSL Finals Day: Is another title brewing for Western Storm?

The last edition of the Kia Super League sees Western Storm favourites to repeat their 2017 success

Matt Roller31-Aug-2019Even if it has struggled to command the attention it deserves in the busiest of British summers, the fourth and final instalment of the Kia Super League has been short on neither quality nor narrative.Sunday’s Finals Day at Hove will be the final chance to watch Western Storm, Loughborough Lightning and Southern Vipers in action, before the women’s game’s primary short-form competition in England and Wales is replaced by The Hundred next year. There have, unsurprisingly, been plenty of reflective thoughts in recent weeks about the rationale behind disbanding six franchises that have found their footing and attracted genuinely passionate fanbases in their short lifespans, but perhaps the build-up to the competition’s climax is not the time for that.Instead, it is a chance to look forward at the two remaining games, with Western Storm strong favourites to lift the title thanks primarily to their all-star batting unit. The competition’s unique format means that by virtue of being group winners – only a Jemimah Rodrigues fifty in a dead rubber prevented them from going through with a perfect record – the Storm go straight into the final, watching on while Vipers and Lightning contest the lunchtime semi-final.That game’s most intriguing subplot involves England’s T20I opening pair from this summer’s Ashes, both of whom have enjoyed confidence-lifting returns to form after miserable runs against Australia.Amy Jones made only 26 runs in six white-ball innings across the Ashes but has taken the lessons on board. “I feel like I’m starting a bit slower, but it’s not really been a problem as long as I keep my head and don’t throw it away,” she told the CricketHER website.”That’s been one of the key learnings from the Ashes, is you have time – it’s amazing what a bit of pressure can do to you, all of a sudden you feel like third ball you have to play a big shot. I feel a lot more in control and confident to build an innings throughout.”Danni Wyatt, meanwhile, will overtake Rodrigues as the tournament’s leading scorer if she can make 40 more runs on Sunday, having herself contributed just 55 in five Ashes innings. Wyatt is as clean a hitter as anyone else in the country on her day, and proved as much against Surrey Stars when she struck a remarkable 60-ball 110, becoming the first English player to score a KSL century in the process – if the Vipers stand a chance, much of the burden will fall on her shoulders.Jones has led the scoring charts for Loughborough, with 300 at 37.50 and three fifties, but their diminutive South African overseas player Mignon du Preez has been something of a revelation; with a T20I strike rate below 100, she had never previously been a free-scoring player, but has hit 246 runs at a rate of 144.7 in this competition.Loughborough go into the semi as slight favourites, but will have to make do with only two overseas players. Shabnim Ismail, the South African seamer, was due to replace Hayley Matthews in the squad after the West Indies allrounder left for international duty, but visa issues prevented her playing in the final league game, and as such she is ineligible for Finals Day.The Vipers, meanwhile will hope that Tash Farrant’s flying form continues. Farrant first broke into the England team as a 17-year-old back in 2013, but despite a reasonable return in T20Is has not played international cricket for over a year; she will hope to be on the fringes of the T20 World Cup squad, after taking 12 cheap wickets in the KSL.But there is a sense that the semi represents little more than a chance to become runners-up, so consistent have the Storm been this season. Unlike last year, they have their full array of stars available on Sunday, and in Rachel Priest, Heather Knight, Fran Wilson and Smriti Mandhana, they have four of the top seven run-getters in the tournament. The blueprint has been fairly straightforward, with openers Priest and Mandhana flying out of the blocks, Knight knocking it around in the middle overs and Wilson finishing things off. Meanwhile, seamer Freya Davies has 18 wickets in the competition – six more than her nearest rivals. If it would be fitting for Loughborough to become the KSL’s fourth different winner in as many seasons, and testament to the tournament’s competitive nature, it is hard to argue that the Storm would not be worthy champions. They have won 25 games across four summers of the KSL, six more than anyone else, and have been the standout team all season – there is a sense that the trophy is theirs to lose.

da heads bet: This summer promises to be a huge one for Arsenal football club as they look to finally end their two-decade wait for a Premier League title at the Emirates.

da bet esporte: Mikel Arteta’s side have finished runners-up in each of the last two campaigns, looking almost certain to finish in such a position at the end of 2024/25 – this time behind Arne Slot’s Liverpool.

The Gunners have done a tremendous job over the last couple of months considering the constant injury issues they’ve faced, losing countless key players in the process.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel are just two of the players who have been absent for large spells, highlighting the lack of squad depth currently available to Arteta in North London.

The injuries have undoubtedly scuppered any title opportunity this season, showcasing the need for added reinforcements this summer, with one area of the pitch in the greatest need of new signings.

The latest on Arsenal’s hunt for a new striker

Over the last few months, a striker has been at the top of Arsenal’s shopping list, arguably being the missing puzzle in their quest for English top-flight glory.

The main name touted with a move to the Emirates is Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, with the Swede impressing in the Premier League over the last couple of years, notching 41 league goals in his previous 58 outings.

However, any deal for his services has been made almost impossible, with Eddie Howe’s side placing a £150m valuation on his head ahead of the summer window.

He’s not the only name in the mix with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, two other names also high on the club’s wish list – but like Isak, no progress has yet been made on any deals.

Despite the links, the Gunners have already started talks to land Lille striker Jonathan David this summer, according to Italian outlet Sempreinter.

They aren’t alone in their pursuit of the 25-year-old, with Bayern Munich also approaching the Canadian, who’s out of contract at the end of this season.

Why David would be a better signing than Isak for Arsenal

Isak’s talents have been on show for every Arsenal fan to see over the last few months, none more so than his effort against the Gunners in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

His effortless ability to glide past the opposition has seen comparisons made to Premier League legend Thierry Henry, which has certainly produced more hype over such a move to join Arteta’s side.

However, if they were to land the 25-year-old, they would have to fork out an English-record fee for his signature, breaking the record set by Moises Caicedo after his £115m deal to join Chelsea in 2023.

Given the added depth needed in key areas, splashing such an amount on one player would severely restrict the other business Arteta is able to conduct in the months ahead.

Such a deal may not be the supporters’ first choice, but when comparing the pair’s respective stats from the ongoing season, the Canadian has managed to outperform Isak in key areas, showcasing how much of a superb signing he would be.

The Canadian, who’s been labelled “one of the best strikers in the world” by Tony Marinaro, has registered more combined goals and assists this campaign, showcasing the attacking threat he carries in the final third.

He’s also completed more of the passes he’s attempted, whilst also completing more take-ons, offering a more all-round option at the top end of the pitch – something which Arteta has greatly missed this season.

Whilst they will face stiff competition from various other European sides for his signature, from the stats produced, it’s evident that the Lille star would be a sensational addition, especially on a free transfer.

Isak will undoubtedly remain as the supporters’ main target this summer, but if the side are to improve in all areas ahead of next season, it’s pivotal that funds are available to edge them closer to title glory in 2025/26.
