Liverpool linked with Fabio Vieira transfer

Liverpool have been rather active in the transfer market recently. Having secured a January deal for Luis Diaz, the Reds will also be set to welcome Fabio Carvalho to their ranks this summer from Fulham.

While Jurgen Klopp’s side still have the chance to snatch the Premier League title away from Manchester City as well as potentially secure the Champions League, it seems as though the Merseyside club have once again been busy behind the scenes regarding another possible transfer deal.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Sunday Mirror (via TEAMtalk), Liverpool have agreed with Porto a first refusal option to sign midfielder Fabio Vieira.

It’s thought the young Portuguese has a release clause amounting to €15m (£12.7m) as the Reds close in on a potential swoop.

The next Mesut Ozil

As a product of Porto’s academy, the 21-year-old has made a total of 117 appearances for the club’s senior and youth sides.

In those appearances, the youngster has scored 23 goals and delivered 24 assists along the way, highlighting how much of an attacking and creative threat he can be.

With 27 league games under his belt this season, the Portuguese talent has found the net six times and delivered 14 assists, which is more than any other Porto player has managed to provide.

To further highlight how much of a dangerous attacking figure he is, no other player at Porto has managed to equal the number of crosses that Vieira (95) has made throughout this campaign.

He’s also listed in the top 10 for shots per 90 minutes in the Portuguese league.

His overall performances have earned him a season rating of 7.17/10 from WhoScored, making him the sixth-highest player currently in Porto’s squad.

This all shows why the midfielder has been likened to Mesut Ozil by football talent scout Jacek Kulig on Twitter, who also said that the player has a “left foot made of gold.”

Taking into account how Liverpool have racked up more goal-creating actions (148) in the Premier League this season than any other side in the top flight, potentially adding a young player like Vieira to their ranks could make them an even more dangerous outfit for many years.

Having negotiated with Porto over the sale of Diaz back in January, the Reds should definitely get in contact with the Portuguese club once again this summer to try and get them to relinquish another one of their vibrant attacking talents.

Newcastle back away from Lingard deal

Newcastle United are reportedly set to walk away from a deal for Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard, according to reports.

What’s the word?

As per The Telegraph, The Magpies have backed out of talks regarding a move for the Englishman owing to his hefty wage demands, with the club not willing to upset their current wage structure by striking a deal.

The report suggests that the 29-year-old – who is out of contract this summer – has asked for £150k-per-week plus a signing on fee, with that figure believed to be too steep despite the notable wealth of the club’s new owners.

f Gareth Southgate’s 2018 World Cup squad, the Warrington-born gem has more than showcased his talent in recent seasons, with it fair to say he hasn’t been handed a fair crack of the whip at his current side this term.

Despite making an impact off the bench in the early weeks of the campaign, both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have routinely overlooked his talent, with his career at his boyhood club now petering out to a sad end.

It looks as if PIF are continuing to continue that trend of overlooking his quality, with their decision to snub a deal potentially being their first disaster since arriving on Tyneside.

Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon will get better, Tim Paine warns

“If you come and watch both of them train you see why they keep improving and keep getting better”, says Australian captain

Daniel Brettig05-Aug-2019Having stared down England, the chants of the Hollies Stand and their own doubts, the Australian side led by Tim Paine has still more improvement in it, the captain has claimed, not least the tourists’ most dominant forces of Edgbaston, Steven Smith and Nathan Lyon.Smith won the match award for a spine-tingling double of 144 and 142 in his first match back from the Newlands scandal ban, leaving Paine to marvel at his concentration while also admitting his tactical alertness had been of major assistance throughout the Test. However, Paine’s most telling remark about Smith and Lyon, who spun England out with a startling 6 for 49 on the final day that also took him past 350 Test wickets, was that both have shown the ability to keep building on their games as senior players.”He could get plenty. As long as he wants to go for I reckon, he doesn’t seem to have too many niggles or injuries over his career,” Paine said when asked how many more wickets Lyon might take. “The ball is coming out as well as ever. He’s a bit the same as Smithy, I feel like every Test match or series they seem to get better which is astonishing at their age. But I think if you come and watch both of them train you see why they keep improving and keep getting better and are a great example for the rest of our group.”No doubt the pitch had worn but I thought he was threatening in the first innings as well. Nathan has played on all different surfaces now and knows exactly what he is doing in all different situations. I think he bowled a bit quicker, which he tends to do over here because he doesn’t get the bounce he gets in Australia or the turn as consistently. He controlled it beautifully and he is going to be a real threat. He can take day five wickets and when you have a spinner like that it can change a game very quickly.”After bearing so much of the leadership load over the past year, Paine said he had gained a lot from the ability to delegate in this match, even if there were times when it looked as though Smith was controlling proceedings almost as much as the official captain was, while David Warner also had input. “It certainly helps. Both of those guys in particular have played a lot more cricket in England than I have,” Paine said. “They’ve played a lot more big tournaments and big series and big Tests than I have.”The same goes for all of our team – they’re not only helping me with the way they lead our group, they’re also helping … the things that Marnus Labuschagne, Mitch Marsh and Travis Head are learning from Steve Smith and Daivd Warner in our change room is stuff that cannot be taught. We’re all tapping into them whether we’re the captain, the coach, the batting coach or bowling coach. They’ve got things they’ve learned through experience that other people don’t have or don’t know. Like I said before, we’d be foolish not to tap into that. They’ve still got a huge presence in our dressing room, there’s no denying that.”ALSO READ: For Edgbaston 2019, read Headingley 1989With a tour game in Worcester beginning on Wednesday, the Australians will look to rest key players, notably the bowlers in this Test and also Smith. Nevertheless, Paine said he would not be standing in the way of allowing Smith to hit another surfeit of balls before the Lord’s Test after the way his exhaustive preparation for Birmingham played out in the middle.”I wouldn’t argue with his preparation, it seems to work for him, but there’s probably a few guys that will miss next week,” Paine said. “We’ve got some guys who haven’t played any cricket and some who have played through a World Cup and then straight into a tour game in Southampton and then into a Test match. So we’ve got to manage not just our fast bowlers but we’ve got to manage the guys who’ve been involved in the World Cup and we’ll have that conversation today or tonight and make sensible calls.”Another key Australian performer to improve across the Test was Pat Cummins, who bowled presentably in the first innings but delivered truly fiery stuff in the second, starting with a sharp lifter to dismiss Rory Burns that drew life from a pitch that had seemingly breathed its last. “I think he said he just struggled in the first innings for a little bit of rhythm, which can happen, he hasn’t played a hell of a lot with the red ball in the last six months, so I think there was a little bit of rhythm,” Paine said. After a steady first innings, Pat Cummins got better as the Test went on•Getty Images

“It was also a big series and something he wanted to have a real impact on so I think there was probably a little bit of nerves as well which was totally fine. I don’t think he was on his own there, but I think he settled into the Test match beautifully and the way he set the tone for our team this morning was exactly what we want from Pat Cummins. Now he’s settled into some rhythm I think he’ll just get better and better.”One of the reasons we pick so many bowlers was because we knew this Ashes series was going to be wearing on our bowlers. Especially the guys who were at the World Cup. We’ve got two world class bowlers sat on the sidelines raring to go [Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood]. I imagine they’ll bowl in the tour game and then put their hand up for selection. We’ll look at the pitch when we get to Lord’s and then make our selections on what will be the best combination to get us 20 wickets. We think we have a lot of different options.”Paine also disagreed that the selectors needed to feel “vindicated” by the performances of Matthew Wade and Peter Siddle, pointing out that both had been good, logical selections tailored to the conditions and also out of deference for their recent performances in first-class ranks. “Matty has been the form players in Australian cricket for the last 12 months. Siddle is someone we see as a handful in these conditions,” Paine said.”Even today on a day five wicket he took no wickets but he was still a handful. He asks questions all the time and with the Dukes ball in English conditions he is a real handful. He bowls a beautiful length over here. I wouldn’t say they are punts, they were good, educated decisions from our selectors.”

Chelsea launch contact to sign Barrios as Atletico Madrid name monster price

Chelsea have now made contact with Ateltico Madrid over signing Pablo Barrios, according to reports, and have been told how much it will take to lure the midfielder away from Spain in 2026.

With the January transfer window less than two months away, the Blues have already got an eye on potential reinforcements. It’s a rare day when those in West London aren’t thinking about the transfer window and Todd Boehly could be about to spend big yet again to help Chelsea bridge the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Having already welcomed the likes of Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro in the summer, those at Stamford Bridge are now reportedly interested in signing Ousmane Diomande.

Ousmane Diomande in action for Sporting in the Primeira Liga.

The Sporting CP defender is one of the most promising centre-backs in Europe and certainly fits the criteria of young stars that Chelsea have been recruiting in recent years. But he’s not the only target in their sights.

The Blues have also been linked with a midfield upgrade in Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. The England international is among the most sought-after talents in the Premier League and will have the biggest decision of his career to make sooner or later. Whether that results in a move to West London remains to be seen.

With Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez at the base of the Blues’ midfield, it would take quite the talent to take a starting spot in the middle of Enzo Maresca’s side, but that may not stand in the way of BlueCo’s spending.

If it’s not Wharton that arrives in 2026, then it could be Atletico Madrid star Barrios, who has entered Chelsea’s radar ahead of the January transfer window.

Chelsea launch contact to sign Pablo Barrios

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea have now made contact over signing Barrios from Atletico Madrid, only to be told that the Spanish club will only be accepting offers in the region of €100m (£88m).

Whilst money hasn’t been a problem for Chelsea in the past, they should question whether they actually need another midfielder with Caicedo and Fernandez already performing so well together this season.

Barrios has certainly impressed enough to force Chelsea to ask themselves the question about his potential arrival, but whether they can lure him away from Atletico Madrid is another question entirely.

Diego Simeone is a big fan of the midfielder and told reporters when the 22-year-old was first breaking through: “He has a fantastic game, and I told him that we’re going to work to shape it. Koke is there now (at the ‘5’) and we are trying to bring out Pablo’s full potential. He has to grow, but he’s doing very well. I’m excited. He’s a kid from the academy, and he can play several roles.”

Pooran and Marsh getting out early 'brought the best out of Markram', says Boucher

Markram, who started IPL 2025 slowly and was largely in Pooran and Marsh’s shadow, has made his up the Orange Cap table quite quickly of late

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Apr-20251:38

Boucher: Markram has developed into an all-round player

Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh have been the heroes of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batting in IPL 2025, but they have also had another batter silently doing his job: Aiden Markram. Mark Boucher feels that Pooran and Marsh getting out early in the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) brought out the best in Markram, who took “smart risks” to do the job for his team.Markram, who was picked by LSG for his base price of INR 2 crore at the auction, had a slow start to the season, but has made scores of 53, 47, 58 and 66 in four out of the last five games.”From a mental space, he [Markram] would have come into the IPL not in the biggest contract. You’re playing with Marsh and Pooran, you probably felt that he’d be the guy to take the backward step there,” Boucher said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut. “I think when Marsh left for personal reasons, that’s when Markram sort of came into his own because he almost adopted that ‘I’m the senior player here’ [position]. And with Marsh and Pooran getting out [early in this game], I thought that brought the best out of him as well.”Related

In the match against RR, Marsh and Pooran fell within the powerplay. Markram stepped up with a 45-ball 66 to do the repair job for LSG. He did not take too many risks, hitting five fours and three sixes in his 45-ball stay. At the end of the day, he was at No. 6 on the Orange Cap table.Markram had earlier said that sticking to his game, and not trying to emulate Pooran and Marsh’s approach of hitting “sixes for fun”, had helped him. LSG did need the sixes, though, and they cam later in the innings from Abdul Samad, whose ten-ball 30 not out was a game-changing effort.”Aiden is a natural leader and he is leading South Africa for those reasons as well,” Boucher said. “So when an opportunity like that arises, he’ll take it on himself to say, ‘Right, I’m the guy who they trust now to bat through the innings and if there’s a risk to be taken and a smart risk at that, I’m the guy who’ll have to do that’. So it almost forces his hand, which I think sometimes brings the best out of player, certainly brings the best out of Markram.”Starting as an opener for South Africa in 2019, Markram was pushed down the order in T20Is in 2021 and has been playing at No. 3 or 4 since then, barring one match in 2024 when he opened. Boucher feels that move helped Markram expand his game and has made him an “all-round” player in the format. At LSG, he’s slotted in as an opener alongside Marsh.”Taking a batter who was always an opener, moving him to the No. 4 position [for South Africa] because he was young enough to be able to make the adaption and was good enough to make an adaption as well, he learned how to play spin in the middle, so he learned different shots – reverse laps and all that type of stuff – which you have to do to keep growing as a player,” Boucher said. “Now towards the prime of his career, he moved back to opening. So he can do the opening role, he’s got a good enough technique, he’s a Test player as well, he’s got the aggression up front and effort if the game does go into the middle, he’s got that game as well. So he’s developed as a player and a more all-around player.”

Josh Inglis and Colin Munro fire with the bat before Melbourne Renegades implode again

Despite being bowled out for 89 in a huge defeat, the Renegades earned Bash Boost point

Andrew McGlashan03-Jan-2021Josh Inglis backed up a return to form from the previous Perth Scorchers outing with his first half-century of the season, as he and Colin Munro, who also made his first fifty of the BBL in a display that included five sixes, combined in a match-defining 117-run stand as the Melbourne Renegades’ miserable tournament continued. This was a contest between the bottom two teams in the league at the start of the day and it was the Scorchers who moved forward. In the first professional cricket match played in Perth this season because of border restrictions, they put in a supreme display much to the delight of a passionate home crowd, that has been starved of cricket action. The Renegades had reshuffled their batting order – with Australia captain Aaron Finch surprisingly moving to No. 3 – but they put in an awful display, adding 89 all out to previous collapses this season for 60 and 80. Although because the Scorchers had earlier made just 63 in their first ten overs, the Renegades were able to take the Bash Boost point despite being 8 for 71.Calm before the stormIt was a solid but unspectacular start from the Scorchers. They were 0 for 29 after the four-over powerplay and had 41 on the board when Liam Livingstone was stumped, charging at 16-year-old birthday boy Noor Ahmad, who comprehensively defeated him for length. The next three overs brought just 15 runs with Jason Roy held to an uncharacteristic strike rate of 84.38 before he picked out mid-off. At the ten-over mark, they were an underwhelming 2 for 63, but two balls into the 11th came a crucial moment when Inglis, on 10, was caught at third man but Peter Hatzoglou stepped on to the rope.Going through the gearsThe Scorchers called the Power Surge in the 13th over and, unlike a few recently, it had the desired effect as the two overs brought 26 runs and injected some much-needed momentum into the innings. That pace was continued, and lifted, as the three overs that followed went for 47. Inglis brought up a 30-ball fifty with a pulled six off Josh Lalor and Munro’s came from a rapid 24 deliveries as the Renegades wilted under the pressure. Two poor pieces of fielding by Mohammad Nabi – a dropped catch off Inglis and a boundary let through his legs in the final over – summed things up for the visitors. When Mitchell Marsh signed off the innings with a huge leg-side six, 122 runs had come from the second ten overs.Batting horror show, but a boostSam Harper, promoted to open the batting in place of Finch, dragged on the second ball from Jhye Richardson and things did not get any better. If any further signs were needed as to how things were going for the Renegades, it came when Finch was run-out backing up as a fierce straight drive from Shaun Marsh clipped Jason Behrendorff’s fingers. The in-form Marsh then fell to a stunning catch at backward point by Roy, which wasn’t far off matching MacKenzie Harvey’s amazing effort a few days ago. When Fawad Ahmed produced a double-wicket maiden in the ninth over it appeared the Renegades might even mess up getting to Bash Boost, but a pulled six from Jack Prestwidge did the job in the tenth over. It was a little game-within-a-game, but it can be debated if it was earned.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Alex Morgan was left off of the USWNT's 18-player squad in what was the biggest call new coach Emma Hayes had to make ahead of the Olympics. The squad features five forwards, Crystal Dunn, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson, leaving no room for Morgan in the squad.

"I want to talk about what an amazing player and human that Alex Morgan has been," Hayes said. "I've only had one opportunity to work with her in the last camp and I saw first-hand not just her qualities but her professionalism, and her record speaks for itself.

"It's not easy making a decision when there's only 16 outfield players and two goalkeepers on a roster of 18… I wanted to go in a different direction, and selected other players."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Morgan has been a regular with the USWNT since making her debut in 2010, earning a total of 224 caps while scoring 123 goals along the way. During that time, she's played at four World Cups and three Olympic tournaments, winning two of the former while earning a Gold and Bronze medal at the latter.

She had initially been excluded in the months following the USWNT's World Cup failure last summer, but had returned in good form with a strong Gold Cup. However, it obviously wasn't enough for her to earn a place in Hayes' squad.

  • WHAT MORGAN SAID

"Today, I’m disappointed about not having the opportunity to represent our country on the Olympic stage," Morgan said. "This will always be a tournament that is close to my heart and I take immense pride any time I put on the crest.

"In less than a month, I look forward to supporting this team and cheering them on alongside the rest of our country. LFG"

    WHAT NEXT FOR THE USWNT?

The U.S. will face Mexico and Costa Rica in a pair of pre-Olympic friendlies in mid-July before heading off to this summer's tournament in France. Once there, they'll face Zambia, Germany and Australia during the group stage, which kicks off on July 25.
