Hodd rescue just fails after Whiteley's blast hurts Yorkshire

Andrew Hodd needed successive sixes off the last two balls to thwart Worcestershire: he could only manage one

ScorecardJoe Clarke, Travis Head, Ross Whiteley and Ben Cox hit half-centuries in Worcestershire’s imposing 350 for six before the Rapids held their nerve with the ball to beat Yorkshire in a thriller by four runs at Emerald Headingley and continue their winning start in the Royal London one-day Cup.Yorkshire wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd hit a six over long-on off the penultimate ball, from Charlie Morris, but needing a repeat from the final ball to rescue an unexpected victory aimed in the same direction and managed only a single.Clarke and Head, the latter who was Yorkshire’s overseas in 2016, laid the platform with 61 off 64 balls and 77 off 94. Whiteley, who hit six sixes in an over during last year’s T20 Blast fixture here, and wicketkeeper Cox then put the Vikings under late pressure with 66 not out off 41 balls and 50 off 33.They brilliantly scored the lion’s share of 122 off the last 10 overs before Yorkshire started their chase strongly through ex-Pear Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Indian centurion Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 101 off 94 balls. They took the score to 173 for one in the 30th over before sliding following the departure of opener Kohler-Cadmore for 89.From there, Yorkshire battled hard and even took the target to six off the last ball with one wicket in hand (Andrew Hodd on strike) having been 253 for five after 42 overs. But they finished on 346 for nine.Yorkshire conceded their second highest total in List A cricket, while Adil Rashid’s two for 86 from 10 overs was his most expensive career return. The Rapids, last season’s semi-finalists, backed up Saturday’s home win over Derbyshire. Yorkshire, meanwhile, have now won one and lost two. After being inserted under overcast skies, the visitors had to navigate some early assistance for the seamers, with Daryl Mitchell trapped lbw by Ben Coad – 14 for one.Clarke and Australian Head then shared 108 in 17 overs for the second wicket before the innings slowed up somewhat as they fell to 220 for five in the 39th, losing Clarke run out backing up and Head superbly caught and bowled by Rashid. But Whiteley strengthened an excellent recent limited overs record against Yorkshire with some blistering hitting, while Cox was equally dynamic. The runs then continued to flow at the start of the Yorkshire reply.Openers Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth shared 72 inside 12 overs before Pujara joined the former to share 101 in 18 overs for the second wicket. While Kohler-Cadmore added to last Friday’s 164 in beating Durham, Pujara passed 50 for the third successive innings. But the chase faltered in the 30th over when leg-spinning all-rounder Brett D’Oliveira returned and had Kohler-Cadmore caught at long-on and pinch-hitter James Wainman caught behind in three balls.Yorkshire quickly slipped from 173 for one and reached 40 overs at 240 for four.Pujara reached his hundred shortly afterwards, but it was all but game up when he found deep mid-wicket off Ed Barnard’s seamers. Some exhilarating lower order hitting raised home hopes again, but it was to no avail as 16 off the last, and then six off the last ball, with one wicket left was a step too far.

Farrant, Elwiss picked for first three T20s of tri-series

Katie George and Lauren Winfield will boost the strength of the squad from 14 to 16 after England’s opening T20 on Wednesday

England have made only one change to the women’s ODI squad that faced South Africa, by replacing wicketkeeper-batsman Lauren Winfield with left-arm quick Tash Farrant for the opener of the T20 tri-series on June 20. Winfield will, however, join the squad of 14 along with Katie George for the double-header on June 23, when the hosts take on South Africa and New Zealand. Allrounder Georgia Elwiss, who last played a T20 international in 2016, was also picked in the squad after playing two ODIs against South Africa.Katherine Brunt, Laura Marsh and Sarah Taylor, who didn’t travel for the T20I tri-series in India in March, also returned. Brunt had missed those T20s because of a back injury and returned for the ODIs against South Africa to take six wickets, the second-most in the series. Taylor was left out of the India tour as part of management of her anxiety condition and she scored a century in the second ODI at Hove, in their 69-run win.The players to be left out after the India tour were Kate Cross, Alice Davidson-Richards, Alex Hartley, Bryony Smith and Fran Wilson. While Cross hasn’t played international cricket since 2016, Hartely was dropped from the ODI squad too recently. Interestingly, Smith put in impressive performances recently – two consecutive half-centuries against the Aboriginal Women, a century and five-for against Essex, and another half-century for Surrey – and was still left out.”In selecting this squad, we’ve had the opportunity to consider our England Women’s Senior Academy fixtures against South Africa and New Zealand and it’s heartening to see so much competition for places,” coach Mark Robinson said.”We saw some excellent individual performances in those games – Sophia Dunkley hit 91 against New Zealand, Emma Lamb and Freya Davies have bowled well and Bryony Smith made an outstanding 92 yesterday against South Africa.”There’s a growing number of players beginning to make cases for selection which is a reflection of the depth that’s starting to emerge and that’s exciting.”Squad: Heather Knight (captain), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgia Elwiss, Tash Farrant, Jenny Gunn, Danielle Hazell, Amy Jones (wk), Laura Marsh, Anya Shrubsole, Nat Sciver, Sarah Taylor (wk), Danni Wyatt

Palmeiras 4 x 2 Atlético-GO – Brasileirão (saiu atrás e virou)
Cerro Porteño 0 x 3 Palmeiras – Libertadores (abriu o placar e venceu)
Palmeiras 0 x 2 Athletico-PR – Brasileirão (saiu atrás e não virou)

INEOS must sell Man Utd dud who was one of Europe’s "most exciting" talents

da prosport bet: Manchester United’s transfer business over the past couple of years will have left much to be desired after the lack of impact made by those walking through the doors at Old Trafford.

da mrbet: £600m alone was spent over the last couple of years during Erik ten Hag’s reign as manager, with the Dutchman undoubtedly wasting a huge amount of money on players not up to the standard of the Premier League.

Casemiro and Joshua Zirkzee are just two of many who have failed to catch the eye after their respective £70m and £36m moves to join the Red Devils.

However, sides like Brighton have demonstrated that you don’t need huge transfer fees to become a competitive top-flight outfit, with their transfer business up there with some of the very best in Europe.

There’s no denying that a clear-out is needed during January, leaving new boss Ruben Amorim – and the INEOS hierarchy – with numerous big calls to make surrounding the future of some players.

Amorim’s transfer calls ahead of January

Following his appointment a couple of weeks ago, current boss Amorm has already tried to implement his 3-4-2-1 system during his opening two games in charge, looking to push United back towards the top of the table.

The 39-year-old has already spoken about how impressed he has been with Mason Mount, handing the former Chelsea ace his first start of his reign against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday night.

Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount

It will take time for the £60m man to settle following a tricky period with injuries, but given his time playing the system at Chelsea, he could be a very useful asset to the new United boss.

However, on the other hand, there are various players who could be edging closer to the exit door, with the aforementioned Casemiro just one player who could be moved on.

Harry Maguire is another name who could be offloaded during the upcoming window, as the club look to cut their losses on the centre-back who cost them a staggering £80m in the summer of 2019.

He’s previously been of interest from the likes of West Ham United, but given his recent injury and fitness issues, coupled with his contract which is set to expire in the summer, it may present the last opportunity to make any money back on their mammoth investment.

However, one player must be top of the departure list, potentially bringing his dismal time at Old Trafford to an end.

The player who needs to be sold from Old Trafford

Brazilian winger Antony certainly raised eyebrows when he followed in the footsteps of Ten Hag, swapping Ajax for Manchester, costing the Red Devils £86m – the second-highest fee paid in the club’s history.

Undoubtedly, such a fee would inject excitement into the fanbase, but his time at Old Trafford has been nothing short of a disaster, looking well below the level expected of such a big-money signing.

During his time in the North West, the 24-year-old has made 88 appearances, scoring just 12 times and costing the club £975k every time he’s made an appearance to date.

Amorim’s appointment has even seen him feature in a right wing-back role in Thursday’s Europa League clash, trying to prove football director John Murtough right, after he dubbed the Brazilian “one of the most exciting young talents” in European football, following his arrival in Manchester back in 2022.

However, he was unable to do so, losing possession 12 times and only winning 50% of his duels, before being replaced just an hour into the encounter in Manchester.

Antony has proven with his goalscoring record that he doesn’t have the ability to be a real threat in attacking areas, unlikely to dislodge the likes of Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the attacking roles behind the striker.

He also pockets a huge £200k-per-week wage at the club, with the hierarchy desperately needing to cut their losses in January and allow him to move on to try and reignite his once-promising career in Europe.

There’s no chance that United will be able to receive a fee close to what they paid for his services in the summer of 2022, but INEOS need to pull the trigger and allow him to leave before his value plummets further, having reportedly told the winger that he can depart in the New Year.

With January coming up and Amorim set to be handed the chance to improve his squad, the deal to sign the Brazilian must be used as a reminder that just because you spend big doesn’t guarantee success – needing to make smart moves to help the new boss make the progression he desires.

"Worse than Malacia": Amorim simply must drop "dreadful" Man Utd star

Netherlands scrape through in tense finish against UAE

The target wasn’t daunting, but Netherlands made it home off the penultimate ball with only three wickets in hand

Alan Gardner16-Oct-20221:05

Edwards praises Pringle as Netherlands show fight

Netherlands scrapped their way to victory in a low-scoring game in Group A, dashing UAE’s hopes of defending a below-par target of 112 off the penultimate ball in Geelong. They were in trouble at 76 for 6 in the 14th over, before a vital lower-order stand between Scott Edwards, the Netherlands captain, and Tim Pringle got them within sight. Pringle fell in the 19th over but Edwards was there to hit the winning run. After watching Namibia comfortably defend 163 against Sri Lanka earlier in the day, UAE captain CP Rizwan decided to try and put a score on the board – but his side was unable to get to grips with the surface or unusual ground dimensions, and went at below a run a ball throughout their innings. Opener Muhammed Waseem top-scored with 41 off 47, but only one batter (Kashif Daud) managed a strike rate over 100. Their tally of three fours – in addition to three sixes – across the innings was the lowest in a completed T20 World Cup innings.Netherlands’ chase demonstrated what might have been achieved with a steeper asking rate. Max O’Dowd slammed a six and three fours in 23 off 18 – ultimately his side’s top score – to help get them ahead of their requirement, and although Junaid Siddique’s three-wicket haul kept UAE in contention, Edwards put his knowledge of Melbourne conditions to good use to steer his side to victory. No Dowd about Netherlands’ approach
Although Siddique later threatened to turn the game for UAE, his loose opening over set the initial tone, with Vikramjit Singh twice carving boundaries through backward point. Vikramjit fell in the second over, slogging across the line at Basil Hameed, but his opening partner O’Dowd crunched his fourth ball into the stands towards deep midwicket. By the time he had belted two fours off Karthik Meiyappan in the fourth over, Netherlands had already equalled the UAE boundary count. But the dismissal of O’Dowd, bowled by a Siddique offcutter in the final over of the powerplay, enabled UAE to drag the scoring rate back, as Netherlands grafted their way to 76 for 4 after 13 overs and still seemingly on course.Junaid Siddique produced a double-wicket over to rock the Netherlands chase•ICC via Getty Images

Siddique’s sideswipe
Any sense that Netherlands would motor on, perhaps looking to improve their net run rate ahead of clashes with Namibia and Sri Lanka, was shattered by Siddique’s third over. Tom Cooper, the Australian-raised middle-order batter who has previous experience of playing at Geelong’s Kardinia Park, was trapped lbw by the first delivery of the 14th over, and Siddique then produced a fabulous inswinging yorker to clean up Roelof van der Merwe second ball. Only one run came off the over, but it could have been even better for UAE had Rizwan not dropped a straightforward chance at cover after Pringle miscued his second delivery. Pringle and Edwards focused on scoring in ones and twos as they pieced together a crucial seventh-wicket stand that took Netherlands to the brink of victory.UAE start slow
Having opted to bat, UAE seemed to place too much of a premium on building a solid base. After 3.4 overs, their score was 7 for 0 and the openers were being outscored by wides – at which point Waseem decided to get on with things and popped Logan van Beek over the leg side for back-to-back sixes. At the other end, Chirag Suri had laboured to 1 off 13 balls, and though he picked up a boundary and a scooped three in the final two powerplay overs, he gloved behind attempting to switch hit van der Merwe. Daud promptly launched his second ball over the rope at deep midwicket – although he would have been caught if Colin Ackermann was stood five yards further back – but UAE then went five overs without a boundary. Pringle, in particular, proved almost impossible to get away, bowling Daud through the gate and finishing with 1 for 13 from his four overs.UAE finish slower
Waseem was dropped on 18, Vikramjit failing to pick up a sliced hack to deep third off van Beek, and struggled for timing on a grippy pitch. He was nevertheless holding the innings together before becoming the third wicket to fall in the 16th over, mistiming a Fred Klaassen cutter towards wide long-on where Pringle took the catch. That sparked a collapse of 6 for 19 from 24 balls: Zawar Farid was run out after getting sent back while looking for a second, before Bas de Leede claimed three in an over. UAE had been 57 for 1 at halfway, but managed just two boundaries in the second half of the innings and failed even to double their score, limping to 111 for 8 from 20 overs.Young blood blooded
The game ended in defeat, but there were bright spots for UAE – not least the performance of spinning allrounder Aayan Afzal Khan, who at 16 years and 335 days became the youngest player ever to appear at a men’s T20 World Cup, breaking Mohammad Amir’s record from the 2009 tournament. Khan couldn’t prevent UAE’s late slide, falling for 5 off seven balls, but put in a tidy showing with the ball: his three overs for 15 featured just a single boundary and saw him claim a first World Cup wicket when Ackermann swung a slog-sweep to deep square leg.

Quer dizer, força máxima dentro do possível, é claro.
