Australia’s new head coach and ODI leadership will be announced in the lead up to their limited-overs tour to England, if all goes to plan for Cricket Australia. As expected, the CA Board met in Melbourne today to work out the process behind the coach hunt.Australia are set to play five ODIs and a one-off T20 in England starting on June 13, their first assignment since the suspension of Steven Smith and David Warner, and the departure of Darren Lehmann.According to CA’s website, Board chairman David Peever said: “The Board has asked [CA’s] management to provide recommendations regarding candidates for the men’s head coach, ODI captain and ODI vice-captain. The Board is anticipating receiving these recommendations in the coming weeks, with a view to making appointments ahead of the ODI tour to the UK.”Once these appointments have been endorsed and finalised, announcements can then be made.”The vacancies were created when Smith (captain), Warner (vice-captain) and batsman Cameron Bancroft were suspended by CA for up to 12 months for the part they played in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Coach Lehmann was cleared of any wrongdoing by an investigation conducted by CA, but on the day before the final Test of the series, he said that he would be stepping down. Tim Paine was named Test captain, but he is not a sure pick in the limited-overs sides.

Banned Bancroft's journey of self-discovery

Spanish lessons, yoga and community work for kids with cancer have allowed him to focus inwards since the ball-tampering fiasco

From sad to angry to awesome – Bancroft ready to play cricket again

Spanish lessons, yoga and a host of community work have all been part of the path taken by Cameron Bancroft since the Newlands ball-tampering scandal. The Australia batsman has been looking to seek the sort of perspective and self-knowledge that will prevent him from following the kind of instructions issued to him by David Warner in the Cape Town dressing room.Bancroft spoke in Perth on Saturday ahead of his return to cricket via Twenty20 and 50-over appearances in the Northern Territory, where he will also endeavour to work closely in developing local talent. It’s the next step on the path away from Newlands as Bancroft serves a nine-month ban from the game imposed by Cricket Australia under its code of conduct.Perspective on life was greatly needed as Bancroft, Warner and the former captain Steven Smith pondered what evolved in South Africa, and Bancroft said he had spent plenty of time devoting himself broadening his own knowledge and also to the service of others as a result.”I’ve been practising a lot of yoga, I started learning a new language, I’ve learned Spanish for six weeks, I’ve been doing a lot of community work, went up to Broome and worked with the Kyle Andrew Foundation and worked with kids with cancer,” Bancroft said in Perth. “I’ve done some work with Manna in a few schools at a breakfast club and things like that, and they’ve all given me great perspective. Personally I’m my own harshest critic at the best of times, so being able to connect with these different points in the community has given me a lot of great perspective for myself and something I’m really grateful for.”I can’t change what happened in South Africa and that’s something I’m completely accountable for. Everything since South Africa I’ve moved towards have been steps closer to one day getting back and playing cricket for Australia again, because I love the game. I love playing cricket and as hard as it may be to connect how learning Spanish links to playing cricket for Australia again, they’re all little stepping stones to me achieving that dream again.”Right now I’m feeling really good, the last couple of months, it has been a bit of a roller coaster, you certainly ride the waves of grieving and everything like that. There’s been times I’ve felt really sad, many times I’ve felt really angry, but overall I’ve worked really hard on myself, been really busy with things and right now it’s just another step forward heading up to Darwin to play some cricket and I’m really looking forward to it.”Getty Images

Warner, Smith and Bancroft have kept in regular contact in recent weeks, while the new Australian coach Justin Langer and the captain Tim Paine have also worked to ensure the suspended trio are up to date on the national team’s fresh direction – an inauspicious tour of England notwithstanding.”I speak to them quite regularly, at least every week, whether that’s a phone call or some messages and stuff, they’re really busy too, but they’re two really great people and we’ve been looking after each other,” Bancroft said of Smith and Warner. “That’s a value I know we hold really closely at the WACA, the idea of looking after your mates, and we’ve been going through all this together and we definitely look out for each other, that’s for sure”Very similarly to me they’ve been up and down as well the way they’ve been feeling, but you can hear it in their voices that you come out of that and you move towards a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s been a little while now since we got back from South Africa [but] it feels like yesterday that I was sitting at the WACA honestly having these really sad conversations with all of you, now here I am and I’m about to step off and play some cricket again. I know those guys would’ve felt exactly the same.”It’s a really great thing for Australian cricket that Justin’s been able to come in and carry forth the values and the hard-working culture he’s produced in Western Australia. I know that all the Australian cricketers, even cricketers that have seen Justin coach WA, have always looked up to him and I have no doubt even with the lack of success they had in England they certainly would have felt overawed by that. It’s a cliche that Rome wasn’t built in a day and I know the Australian cricket team won’t be built in one series; that takes time and no better way than having Justin leading that.”The level of infamy shared by the Newlands trio has been significant, but Bancroft said that there was no stage at which he considered moving away from the game. He stated that the coverage of the ball-tampering incident, and the outrage that stemmed from it back home in Australia, had been “appropriate” to the events that took place.Cameron Bancroft was under massive scrutiny as he came out to bat•AFP

“Cricket was firmly always my path and my focus to come back to,” Bancroft said. “As little a step as it was to get up in the morning and have breakfast at the same time each day, or wake up and have breakfast and then go to the gym and train or run, as little steps as they were, for me they were really positive movements to that end goal – that I’m going to return and play cricket again.”I took a step back and simplified my life a lot. When you’re in the media a lot, good or bad, it can be really challenging to deal with and really challenging to digest the different opinion that flies around. There was a lot of opinion, a lot of people saying things, and for me it was about me, my mistake and the poor decision I made. What anyone else thought or said didn’t change the fact I made a really bad decision and I’ve had to really give myself for that error I made, but it’s all a part of moving forward with it all. Media reacted appropriately to the situation and what happened and I have no anger or judgment or resentment about that at all.”The role of Bancroft’s parents, Frank and Linda, was also significant in helping him emerge from the post-Newlands fog. Over coming days Bancroft will turn mentor himself, as he seeks to repay NT Cricket for giving him an opportunity to play while banned from international and state representation.”There would’ve been times when mum and dad’s phones would have blown up,” Bancroft said. “I’ve had things crop up, particularly when you’re grieving and going through some emotional responses to the events that have happened in South Africa and they’ve been there for me, they’ve listened, they’ve given me perspective and I feel like I’ve stepped closer to coming out of that, moving on with my life and also with my cricketing career too.”I’ve been working with Northern Territory Cricket to give back to some of their programmes they offer, with the weather up there they’ve got quite a few squads that are training right now, so I’ll look to give my wisdom, give my heart, give my all to help those guys fulfil their potential. It isn’t about me in that space and that was a really big learning curve in the community services, I rock up and give my heart to these people and it’s not about me at all, it’s about them. That’s the great thing I look forward to is that I’m not here for me, I’m here for those guys and what can I do to help.”

Hodd rescue just fails after Whiteley's blast hurts Yorkshire

Andrew Hodd needed successive sixes off the last two balls to thwart Worcestershire: he could only manage one

ScorecardJoe Clarke, Travis Head, Ross Whiteley and Ben Cox hit half-centuries in Worcestershire’s imposing 350 for six before the Rapids held their nerve with the ball to beat Yorkshire in a thriller by four runs at Emerald Headingley and continue their winning start in the Royal London one-day Cup.Yorkshire wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd hit a six over long-on off the penultimate ball, from Charlie Morris, but needing a repeat from the final ball to rescue an unexpected victory aimed in the same direction and managed only a single.Clarke and Head, the latter who was Yorkshire’s overseas in 2016, laid the platform with 61 off 64 balls and 77 off 94. Whiteley, who hit six sixes in an over during last year’s T20 Blast fixture here, and wicketkeeper Cox then put the Vikings under late pressure with 66 not out off 41 balls and 50 off 33.They brilliantly scored the lion’s share of 122 off the last 10 overs before Yorkshire started their chase strongly through ex-Pear Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Indian centurion Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 101 off 94 balls. They took the score to 173 for one in the 30th over before sliding following the departure of opener Kohler-Cadmore for 89.From there, Yorkshire battled hard and even took the target to six off the last ball with one wicket in hand (Andrew Hodd on strike) having been 253 for five after 42 overs. But they finished on 346 for nine.Yorkshire conceded their second highest total in List A cricket, while Adil Rashid’s two for 86 from 10 overs was his most expensive career return. The Rapids, last season’s semi-finalists, backed up Saturday’s home win over Derbyshire. Yorkshire, meanwhile, have now won one and lost two. After being inserted under overcast skies, the visitors had to navigate some early assistance for the seamers, with Daryl Mitchell trapped lbw by Ben Coad – 14 for one.Clarke and Australian Head then shared 108 in 17 overs for the second wicket before the innings slowed up somewhat as they fell to 220 for five in the 39th, losing Clarke run out backing up and Head superbly caught and bowled by Rashid. But Whiteley strengthened an excellent recent limited overs record against Yorkshire with some blistering hitting, while Cox was equally dynamic. The runs then continued to flow at the start of the Yorkshire reply.Openers Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth shared 72 inside 12 overs before Pujara joined the former to share 101 in 18 overs for the second wicket. While Kohler-Cadmore added to last Friday’s 164 in beating Durham, Pujara passed 50 for the third successive innings. But the chase faltered in the 30th over when leg-spinning all-rounder Brett D’Oliveira returned and had Kohler-Cadmore caught at long-on and pinch-hitter James Wainman caught behind in three balls.Yorkshire quickly slipped from 173 for one and reached 40 overs at 240 for four.Pujara reached his hundred shortly afterwards, but it was all but game up when he found deep mid-wicket off Ed Barnard’s seamers. Some exhilarating lower order hitting raised home hopes again, but it was to no avail as 16 off the last, and then six off the last ball, with one wicket left was a step too far.

Hasan heroics trump Gul six-for as Quetta win

Pakistan’s Under-19 captain launched a last-over six off Kieron Pollard to seal a dramatic win that lifted Quetta Gladiators to fourth in PSL standings

The Report by Danyal Rasool07-Mar-2018

PCB

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA thrilling contest got the finish it deserved, with teenager Hasan Khan smashing Kieron Pollard for six off the penultimate ball to sealing a much-needed two-wicket win for Quetta Gladiators. Multan Sultans had looked like they were slightly ahead for much of the Quetta’s 152 chase, only to pipped at the end. This came despite a superb vintage performance from Umar Gul, who took 6 for 24 in his first game this season.Multan’s first innings total owed much to its skipper Shoaib Malik, who blazed an unbeaten 43-ball 65 after they had lost Kumar Sangakkara off the first ball. Quetta’s bowlers kept the batsmen in check for the first 15 overs, Mohammad Nawaz and Rahat Ali in particular hitting their targets to ensure there would be no repeat of the massive total Multan amassed against Peshawar on Tuesday. But 57 were scored off the last five as Quetta, much like Peshawar, lost their discipline and composure towards the death overs.Quetta’s innings began on track before a quick double-strike by Gul removed both openers either side of the 50-run mark. The game remained evenly poised for much of the chase, but the early dismissal of an off-colour Kevin Pietersen was a huge blow for last year’s finalists. Cameos from Rilee Rossouw and Rameez Raja Jnr kept them in the hunt, with Anwar Ali, and at the very end Hasan, sealing the win in a massive heist.Where the match was wonWhile the early loss of their openers meant Multan spent their Powerplay regrouping, Quetta’s opening pair gave them a fast start that kept them in touch with the asking rate for the best part of their chase. Shafiq and Watson put on 46 without loss for the first Powerplay, the most runs Multan have conceded in the first six so far. They may have lost both of them soon after, but the start meant they had a margin for error, and by the time the lower middle order began to regroup, the asking rate wasn’t yet insurmountable. That was in stark contrast to Multan’s first six. They were reduced to 3 for 2 by the end of the first two overs, and sent in Sohail Tanvir to try and up the ante. That didn’t quite work either, and they ended up with 35 by the time the fielding restrictions were lifted. In a close contest, those 11 runs made all the difference. The men that won itNot many people get the chance to bookend a game like Hasan did. He took a catch to remove Sangakkara first ball at short midwicket. Nearly 40 overs later, he smashed Pollard for six off the penultimate delivery to seal a framatic win. He didn’t have a great deal to do in the middle, but was stellar when called upon, conceding just nine runs in the two overs of left-arm spin he bowled. With the bat, he didn’t even breach double figures, but his nine runs off three balls is guaranteed to be a more famous innings than the 65 Malik smashed earlier on.Vintage Umar GulGul rolled back the years with a scintillating performance, becoming only the second player in PSL history – after Ravi Bopara – to take six wickets in a match. It began with the removal of the openers, and he returned to remove opposition captain Sarfraz with the first ball of his second spell, swinging the game back in his side’s favour. By the end of three overs, his figures read a mightily impressive 3-0-11-4. His last over was the definition of a mixed bag, as the two sixes he conceded brought Quetta right back into the game, although the two wickets he took – taking his tally to six and his overall T20 tally to 200 wickets – seemed to have edged Multan back ahead. You’re unlikely to see a better bowling performance end up on the losing side all season.Where they standMultan are still at the top of the table with nine points, but second-placed Karachi have two games in hand. Quetta, meanwhile, go from 5th to 4th, having won three of six games.

Farrant, Elwiss picked for first three T20s of tri-series

Katie George and Lauren Winfield will boost the strength of the squad from 14 to 16 after England’s opening T20 on Wednesday

England have made only one change to the women’s ODI squad that faced South Africa, by replacing wicketkeeper-batsman Lauren Winfield with left-arm quick Tash Farrant for the opener of the T20 tri-series on June 20. Winfield will, however, join the squad of 14 along with Katie George for the double-header on June 23, when the hosts take on South Africa and New Zealand. Allrounder Georgia Elwiss, who last played a T20 international in 2016, was also picked in the squad after playing two ODIs against South Africa.Katherine Brunt, Laura Marsh and Sarah Taylor, who didn’t travel for the T20I tri-series in India in March, also returned. Brunt had missed those T20s because of a back injury and returned for the ODIs against South Africa to take six wickets, the second-most in the series. Taylor was left out of the India tour as part of management of her anxiety condition and she scored a century in the second ODI at Hove, in their 69-run win.The players to be left out after the India tour were Kate Cross, Alice Davidson-Richards, Alex Hartley, Bryony Smith and Fran Wilson. While Cross hasn’t played international cricket since 2016, Hartely was dropped from the ODI squad too recently. Interestingly, Smith put in impressive performances recently – two consecutive half-centuries against the Aboriginal Women, a century and five-for against Essex, and another half-century for Surrey – and was still left out.”In selecting this squad, we’ve had the opportunity to consider our England Women’s Senior Academy fixtures against South Africa and New Zealand and it’s heartening to see so much competition for places,” coach Mark Robinson said.”We saw some excellent individual performances in those games – Sophia Dunkley hit 91 against New Zealand, Emma Lamb and Freya Davies have bowled well and Bryony Smith made an outstanding 92 yesterday against South Africa.”There’s a growing number of players beginning to make cases for selection which is a reflection of the depth that’s starting to emerge and that’s exciting.”Squad: Heather Knight (captain), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgia Elwiss, Tash Farrant, Jenny Gunn, Danielle Hazell, Amy Jones (wk), Laura Marsh, Anya Shrubsole, Nat Sciver, Sarah Taylor (wk), Danni Wyatt
