Vilas, Clark stop Worcestershire's winning run

ScorecardJordan Clark was in scintillating form with bat and ball•Getty ImagesLancashire Lightning recorded their second successive victory in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup when they defeated the previously undefeated Worcestershire Rapids by 152 runs at Emirates Old Trafford. The result keeps Lancashire’s hopes of qualification from the North Group very much alive, although they probably still need to win all three of their remaining North Group games. Despite this unexpected reverse, Worcestershire are still expected to finish in the top three, thereby ensuring their progression. The game was a triumph for Dane Vilas, who made his maiden Lancashire century in his side’s 313 for 5, but it was even more memorable for Jordan Clark who followed his 79 not out by taking 4 for 34 as Worcestershire managed only 161 all out in 34.5 overs in replyThe first half of Lancashire’s innings was characterised by steady accumulation punctuated by the regular loss of wickets; the second half by a magnificent, unbroken 160-run partnership between Vilas and Clark, the latter’s power-hitting contrasting pleasantly with the South African’s inventive strokeplay and astute innings management. These qualities were noticed by their absence earlier in the morning when Alex Davies had lost his middle stump to the twelfth ball of the day, bowled by John Hastings, and Haseeb Hameed, having batted competently for 36, edged Josh Tongue to Ben Cox when shaping to work the ball to third man.The 19-year-old Tongue soon collected his second notable wicket when Liam Livingstone obligingly pulled him to Ross Whiteley at deep square leg. It was not the subtlest of traps and Lancashire’s problems were compounded five overs later when Karl Brown was bowled by Brett D’Oliveira for a well-made 77-ball 63 which had included four fours and two sixes.Vilas marked his arrival at the wicket by reverse sweeping his first ball from Moeen Ali for four but the England off-spinner claimed an important wicket shortly after when he had Steven Croft lbw for five, leaving Lancashire on 153 for five in the 32nd over.D’Oliveira’s well-controlled leg spin earned him figures of one for 32 from his ten overs but the other bowlers came in for severe punishment as Vilas and Clark’s partnership gathered pace. Ali, who was twice lifted for straight sixes by Clark, finished with one for 75 as the pair set a new List A sixth-wicket record for Lancashire against Worcestershire.Vilas hit twelve fours and, having reached his fifty off 49 balls, took a further 34 deliveries to reach a hundred which was completed off the fourth ball of the final over. Clark, whose batting has been one of the features of Lancashire’s early season, finished with 79 not out off 58 balls. He hit four fours and three sixes. Tongue was the only Rapids bowler to take more than one wicket and he finished with two for 46 off seven overs.Needing to score at 6.26 runs per over to win, Worcestershire’s innings started badly and got progressively worse. Ali completed a poor match when he was well beaten by James Anderson and caught behind in the third over after the resumption.Tom Kohler-Cadmore mis-drove Kyle Jarvis to Stephen Parry three overs later and even the 59-run stand between Daryl Mitchell and Joe Clarke was halted by the loss of four wickets in 21 balls for 12 runs.Mitchell departed for 29 when he chipped Parry to Brown at midwicket and D’Oliveira then feathered a catch to Davies off Clark, who also had his near namesake athletically caught by Anderson for 36.When Whiteley was bowled by one that kept a little low from Clark, Worcestershire were 82 for six in the eighteenth over and their plight became even worse four overs later when Ed Barnard, having made eight, chopped the suddenly unplayable Clark on to his stumps.Brief partnerships merely delayed the inevitable but it allowed Simon Kerrigan to take two wickets and Jarvis to remove Leach for 12.

Tottenham: Postecoglou Could Sign His Own Odegaard In £50m "Diamond"

Tottenham Hotspur have bolstered their attacking ranks significantly this summer, but could be set to make one final acquisition to cement Ange Postecoglou’s already impressive start to life in north London…

Who else will Tottenham Hotspur sign?

With James Maddison having endeared himself to his new fanbase with ease, and Manor Solomon a fine backup option having occupied the bench, it could be easy to assume that their attacking business for this window was coming to an end.

However, the rumour mill has continued to turn, with reports circulating suggesting various offensive stars who could still make the move to N17, especially given the departure of Harry Kane, and the goalscoring vacancy he has left.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

So, perhaps in an effort to create some additional chances to offset this absence, they could make their interest in Jeremy Doku tangible and fork up the £50m that Rennes are commanding.

How good is Jeremy Doku?

As a tricky wide man who has often deputised through the middle, it is clear that this Belgian magician has the skillset to both terrorise full-backs and bamboozle defensive midfielders wherever he is deployed.

In fact, such is his immense ability to forge chances for others, FBref even include Martin Odegaard on his list of ‘similar players’ despite their favoured positions being quite different.

This is likely due to the high volume of opportunities their excellence forges for teammates in the final third, with Doku using his speed and tricks whilst the Norway international prefers his technical prowess.

The latter allowed the Arsenal maestro to score 15 and assist eight in the Premier League last season, with his 7.35 average rating the highest of any Gunners player.

Such a figure was largely buoyed by his 2.1 key passes per game, which admittedly blows Doku’s figures out of the water.

He only managed one key pass per game last term in Ligue 1, yet his eight goal contributions allowed him to boast a 7.15 average rating in the French top flight, via Sofascore.

Then, as if to emphasise his starring qualities, when compared to other midfielders across Europe he sits in the top 1% for non-penalty goals, shot-creating actions, progressive carries and successful take-ons all per 90, via FBref.

His compatriot Kevin De Bruyne sought to laud his international teammate, noting:

“He is nimble, fast and he can dribble. Of course, he sometimes makes a mistake, but who doesn't? He is a diamond in the rough.”

Although Odegaard does not quite boast that same dynamism and ability to dance through numerous defenders, his sheer quality in possession is something which Doku will aspire to add to his game, although the foundation already seems very much in place.

Postecoglou would love to have another creator akin to Maddison within his side, in an effort to remove some of the focus away from the England international.

The former Leicester City maestro has enjoyed a fine start to the new campaign, recording two assists in their first two Premier League games; his presence seems to be underpinning the Australian’s revolution with a patented tireless work rate and elegance in possession.

Combining this with the explosive Doku, who mirrors the key man of their north London rivals, could help them bridge the gap that has opened up between them in recent years.

'It's as simple as see ball, hit ball' – Lynn

Chris Lynn has said he stuck to the basics and focused on putting the bad balls away during his unbeaten 93 off 41 balls in the record opening stand with Gautam Gambhir

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2017The prolific opening combination of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa was one of the highlights of Kolkata Knight Riders’ 2016 season. Uthappa had lauded their “batting chemistry”; they had stacked up staggering numbers after all: 566 runs at an average of 37.73, with one century and four fifty stands. Why would they then change the combination in their opening match of the 2017 IPL? The answer is Chris Lynn. Knight Riders’ frail middle order was probably a cause of concern from last year and Friday night showed using Lynn’s strength against pace bowling early on was not a bad idea, even though he had opened only twice in his career of 85 T20s. It meant Uthappa would probably bat at No. 3, but he was not required to in their opening fixture against Gujarat Lions.Knight Riders’ Suryakumar Yadav revealed in the post-match conference that their strategy to open with Lynn was not an impromptu decision after Gujarat Lions had scored 183 for 4. “Since he [Lynn] came to Kolkata and we started the camp, we had one thing in mind – our captain backed him to open,” Suryakumar said. “It was the best thing and he [Gambhir] told Lynn straightaway that he’s going to open in the tournament so it was not instant, it was pre-planned.”Lynn was the dominant one in the opening partnership with Gambhir as he raced to a 19-ball fifty, hammering 23 runs against Dwayne Smith in the seventh over. He said he did not try anything unusual and only focused on getting the basics right by putting the bad balls away.”We knew we had to get off to a good start and we did that, we put them under pressure in the first six overs and then we took our momentum from there,” Lynn told after ending unbeaten on 93 off 41 balls.”I try and keep things very simple, it’s as simple as see ball, hit ball. If they bowl a good ball, you’ve got to respect that and try and get down at the other end and if they bowl a bad ball, you’ve to try and put it away. That’s as simple as I can put it. And if I’m not having fun, I’m not going to do well. That’s the main thing.”Chris Lynn was particularly unforgiving against Gujarat Lions’ seamers•ESPNcricinfo LtdOpening the batting also meant Lynn did not have to make too many adjustments to his game to suit Indian conditions. “Probably just the [adjustment to the] bounce, and maybe as a batter you might put your stance a little bit lower and you’ve got to hold your shape a little bit more. As an opener the difference is minimal but batting in the middle order has a lot more changes – starting against spin is one thing. But upfront it’s generally the ball slotting on, and it’s a nice hard Kookaburra… as I said, have a bit of fun and you never know. I had a little bit of luck tonight but you make use of luck so it’s a positive thing.”It may not always be my night but fingers crossed I can always pick that momentum and ride that wave throughout that tournament now. So that’s the challenge and teams are going to watch the footage and work a plan out and I’m going to have to try and throw a punch back and go one better, that’s part of the game but it’s great fun while we’re doing it.”Knight Riders’ opening stand of 184 was the highest total chased down in the history of T20s, with Gambhir unbeaten on 76 off 48 balls. Lynn said he was “very comfortable” with Gambhir and there was hardly going to be a chance of scoring a century since the captain was also scoring at a quick rate.”I’m just really happy with the way we gelled, we did it so quickly,” Lynn said. “That’s probably the second time I’ve batted with GG now. We were very comfortable, we ran between the wickets well and that’s the best sign coming out of it. It’s good fun and to do it none down was even more special.”First I was happy to get off the mark, then get the fifty but the way Gauti was batting, he was never going to give me a chance to get to a hundred. But I’ll take 90 not out any day of the week over a hundred, as everyone says the team comes first.”

Angelo Mathews declared fit for India tour

Kusal Perera and Asela Gunaratne are also expected return to the national set-up when Sri Lanka fly to India for a full tour

Madushka Balasuriya31-Oct-2017Angelo Mathews will be fit for Sri Lanka’s tour of India in November, while Kusal Perera and Asela Gunaratne are also expected to return to the national set-up.SLC to name head coach by end of the year

Sri Lanka Cricket expects to announce a new head coach by the end of the year, though it is unlikely to happen prior to Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour of India in November.
SLC confirmed that they were in conversations with a couple of coaches about the vacant position. Interim coach Nic Pothas, who has been in charge since the abrupt departure of Graham Ford in June, is also in the running.
“We are discussing with about three or four coaches, including Nic Pothas. We hope to finalise the decision by the end of the year,” SLC CEO Ashley De Silva said.
“When it comes to recruiting a new coach, we have to be sure to select the right one, therefore it takes some time. As for the names, some of them are still working in other places so if it gets leaked they won’t be happy. We’ll reveal it when the time is right.”
It means that Sri Lanka will head into arguably their toughest tour this year without a permanent head coach. De Silva refused to confirm if Pothas would retain his role as interim coach for the tour of India.

All three were unavailable for the recently concluded Pakistan tour, but will be welcomed back warmly following Sri Lanka’s recent struggles in limited-overs contests. Sri Lanka have lost their last 16 white-ball matches, including both ODI and T20I series whitewashes against Pakistan and India.Their next assignment is a full tour of India starting with the first of the three Tests on November 16 in Kolkata, followed by three ODIs and as many T20Is.”Angelo and Kusal Janith [Perera] have both recovered and they will be considered for selection for the Indian series. Asela Gunaratne is fit as well,” SLC CEO Ashley De Silva said.Sri Lanka’s interim head coach Nic Pothas, who was speaking alongside Sri Lanka’s three captains for the Pakistan tour, hinted that after a string of such negative results change in personnel might be the best way forward.”It’s pretty obvious what the mood will be like when you’ve lost 16 games,” Pothas said. “With respect to new faces, that’s a conversation that we need to have with the selectors. But I think it stands to reason that in any walk of life, when you’ve had negative results for a period of time you need to see some change somewhere.”While Sri Lanka ended the series with eight straight defeats, they had started it on a much more promising note, becoming the first team to win a Test series against Pakistan in the UAE, since Australia in 2002. Pothas was keen to point this, as he stressed on the other positives derived from the tour.”On the Test series, let me remind you that we made history,” he stated. “We did something that no other nation has ever done in the UAE. It tends to have been forgotten due to the fact that ODIs follow the Tests. But we have to give huge credit to the team and to the captain.”Overall across the whole tour we can certainly glean a lot of positives. The fielding has improved out of sight and certainly was one of the shining lights throughout the month that we were out there. And the bowling as well was of a very high standard; the execution of the plans was very pleasing.”Obviously, some of the batting didn’t go according to plan, but that’s the cricket world and other teams are allowed to play well. It was also one of the best bowling attacks in the world so it’s always going to be tough, but I think on the whole the series started off very well with that Test win. Certainly the attitude, the character and the fight shown by that team was very, very pleasing.”The tour also saw a Sri Lankan team return to Pakistan for the first time since 2009, when their team bus was attacked by armed gunmen in Lahore. The decision to play a match in Lahore resulted in several players pulling out of the game, but also provided opportunities for several fringe players.Sri Lanka’s limited-overs captain Upul Tharanga was among those that pulled out, which gave Thisara Perera the opportunity to captain the T20 side. Despite losing all three matches, Perera was full of praise for his young charges.”In truth when speaking about the Lahore visit, it was a much changed team to the one we initially expected to take part,” Thisara said. “Even though it was a young side, when captaining them I realised that they were much more mature than I had thought. The support they gave, their attitude, as a captain it was a great help in terms of handling the team.”The team didn’t have many players with international experience. Most were inexperienced, including me as captain. Nevertheless the players had the drive to play and win. Although it was a youthful side, a lot of them had experience playing domestic cricket. Their attitude was also right. That’s the attitude we need in the team. Although we didn’t perform as we would have liked with the bat, the bowlers did us proud.”The second match, we had the match in our hands till the last ball, I think we lost the victory as we didn’t have the experience to handle it. If these players are given a chance they can do a lot more for Sri Lanka cricket.”

Tough Bengal, clinical Jharkhand through to semi-final

Bengal knocked Maharashtra out in a last-over thriller chasing 319 while Jharkhand dismantled Vidarbha for 159 as both teams marched into the knockouts

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Mar-2017With three needed off three balls, and a spot in the Vijay Hazare semi-final up for grabs, Aamir Gani pulled off a delightful inside-out cover drive for four to ensure Bengal chased down their target of 319 in style.Gani’s cameo followed sturdy contributions from the top order as Shreevats Goswami (74 off 88 balls), Anustup Majumdar (66 off 59 balls) and Sudip Chatterjee (unbeaten on 60 off 51 balls) all made half-centuries and did an excellent job keeping up with the asking rate. That meant Maharashtra were knocked out of the knockouts, and that Rahul Tripathi (95 off 74 balls) and Nikhil Naik’s (63 off 52 balls) efforts were in vain. They had smashed 109 runs in the last 10 overs to put a strong total on the board, and then their bowlers had pushed Bengal pretty hard in the chase as well. Shrikant Mundhe dismissed the set batsman Majumdar in the 49th over to force the equation to 15 needed off 10 balls with five wickets in hand and Shamshuzama Kasi struck with the third ball of the final over. The next one, however, was smashed for the match-winning boundary.Bengal would have to face the MS Dhoni-led Jharkhand in the semi-final on Friday, a six off his bat making sure his team would be one of the final four. The six-wicket victory though was set up by the bowlers who reduced Vidarbha to 159 for 9 after they had chosen to bat first. Only Ravi Jangid (62 off 87) and Ganesh Satish (35 off 54) made any contributions of note. Rajneesh Gurbani, the No. 9, did his best to make 22 off 70 balls so that Vidarbha at least played out their quota of overs. Considering they were 18 for 4 at one point, that was something of a consolation for Faiz Fazal and his men.Jharkhand’s Monu Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 27. Varun Aaron (1 for 41) and Shahbaz Nadeem was at his stifling best, picking up 1 for 13 from eight overs. Their good work was supported by the batsmen with Ishank Jaggi top-scoring with 41 off 61 balls and remaining unbeaten.

£49.5k star has the "potential" to join Wolves this window

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the hunt to sign a proven international defender this summer; however, transfer insider Dean Jones is 'sceptical' about how the Old Gold will go about pulling his signature off.

What's the latest news at Wolverhampton Wanderers?

Truth be told, Wolves have endured an extremely frustrating transfer window and their squad is in need of some replenishment following the departures of many key assets this summer, including Ruben Neves, Raul Jimenez, Nathan Collins and Conor Coady, as per Transfermarkt.

Financial Fair Play restrictions have hampered their ability to attract players to Molinuex over the course of the window, with only Matt Doherty and Tom King entering the fold in the West Midlands, both on free transfers.

Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui left the club under a cloud in the week leading up to the opening fixtures of the Premier League campaign and was subsequently replaced by former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil, as per The Guardian.

Despite spirits being low around the Old Gold, Wolves turned in an encouraging performance in their first competitive match of the campaign away to Manchester United at Old Trafford, losing 1-0 courtesy of a Raphael Varane header in an encounter they should've taken at least a share of the spoils from, as per BBC Sport.

Controversially, Wolves were denied a penalty in the dying embers of proceedings as Amadou Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic in the box, something which O'Neil has since received an apology for, which he revealed in his post-match interview with Sky Sports, stating: "We have just spoken to Jon Moss and fair play to him for coming straight out and apologising and saying it was a blatant penalty and should have been given."

What has Dean Jones said about Nico Elvedi?

Last month, Football Insider claimed that Wolves were close to completing a deal to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, who earns around £49k per week, in a deal worth around £7 million.

Nevertheless, things seem to have gone a little quiet with regard to the £49k-a-week earner's proposed arrival at Molineux, though transfer insider Jones thinks that there is still 'potential' for a deal to be done if Wolves can somehow evade their financial restrictions.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones stated: "I still think there is potential around this deal. But it's difficult to know how likely it is to come off, purely because of this financial standpoint we're at with Wolves.

"If it is a one in, one out policy, then they've got to weigh up whether it's worth making the change or it's going to be detrimental to have another new face in and another old face going out.

"You're losing a lot of the identity of this team from recent times. That's not a completely bad thing because, for a lot of last season, things weren't going well. There's a lot to be said for changing the narrative around the club once you've come through a storm and managed to weather it a little bit.

"While Elvedi would be a good signing, I'm just a bit sceptical about how on earth they actually make it happen."

What now for Wolverhampton Wanderers?

Wolves take on Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend at Molinuex and will be hoping to claim their first three points of the campaign despite a backdrop of uncertainty at the club, as per Sky Sports.

In terms of recruitment, West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has emerged as a target to strengthen offensive depth at the Old Gold and it is believed that his current employers would be willing to let him go if they can secure a suitable replacement at the London Stadium, according to TEAMtalk.

Daniel Podence could recoup some funds for Wolves to spend in the transfer market and is wanted by Scottish champions Celtic in a deal that may net the Old Gold £12 million, according to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph.

The Athletic report that Wolves remain interested in experienced West Ham left-back Aaron Cresswell; however, their efforts to land the former England international have proved unsuccessful as of yet.
