Shaheen Afridi and Dinesh Chandimal star on day of fluctuating fortunes

The Pakistan quick took his maiden five-for, while the Sri Lanka batsman rescued his side from 80 for 5

The Report by Danyal Rasool in Karachi20-Dec-2019On a day that threatened to mirror the script of its predecessor in the first hour, Sri Lanka dug in and clawed their way to, and then well past, Pakistan’s first innings total. The lead of 80 came courtesy lower-order contributions that will have frustrated Pakistan no end, with Dinesh Chandimal tying the innings together as Sri Lanka held off a surging Pakistan pace attack. The home side, for their part, did well enough to ensure there wasn’t any bloodletting in the tricky final hour the openers had to deal with, as Shan Masood and Abid Ali reduced the deficit to 23 by stumps. From 80 for 5, partnerships of 67, 37, 51 and 36 extended Sri Lanka’s innings well into the third session, Dhananjaya de Silva and Chandimal robbing Pakistan of the momentum they had generated in an opening hour of hostile fast bowling. Nightwatchman Lasith Embuldeniya was dropped early in the day but fell soon after in a bizarre attempt to slog-sweep Mohammad Abbas, while Shaheen Afridi – who picked up his first five-for in Tests – needed no such largesse from Angelo Mathews, bringing one in to tickle the batsman’s inside edge through to the keeper.Pakistan may well have felt this was their chance to come away with a lead, but swift counterattacking – and an ineffectual spell from a confidence-sapped Yasir Shah – poured water over those plans. When de Silva strode down the crease to loft Yasir over his head, following it up with a back-foot punch through cover, the shackles were broken. Yasir was unable to settle on either length, line or pace, with both batsmen taking advantage of the inconsistency as Sri Lanka neared 150.The breakthrough came thanks to Afridi, with de Silva unable to get on top of a short-pitched delivery and sending it straight down fine leg’s throat. But the wicket did little to stem the flow of runs before lunch, and by now, even Niroshan Dickwella, who had used up more than his fair share of luck in his first half hour at the crease, was emerging from his shell. Then Abbas would castle him with perhaps the ball of the day, beating him on the inside edge with an inward-seaming delivery that clipped the top of off, and at 182 for 7, with Sri Lanka nine short of Pakistan’s first-innings total, it seemed this would become a second-innings shootout.Pakistan were guilty of letting the game drift for large spells, and the eighth-wicket partnership at one point scored at nearly 4.50 runs per over. Dilruwan Perera was perfectly comfortable keeping Chandimal company as Sri Lanka brought up the 200 and then beyond, the highlight being Chandimal spanking Naseem Shah for three fours in an over.Dinesh Chandimal struck a crucial fifty•Getty ImagesWhen Chandimal fell, Dilruwan took over the mantle. Pakistan duly spread the field for him; practically begging him to take a single and turn the strike over. Despite this, Dilruwan continued to find the boundary, despite seven fielders stationed in the deep at most points during his ninth-wicket stand with Vishwa Fernando. Haris Sohail may have been successful getting rid of Chandimal, but when they tried his occasional left-arm spin against Dilruwan, he carted him down the ground for a six off the first ball of his spell.Tea came and went, and Sri Lanka moved past 250, and continued to march on. It took the return of Afridi to finally clean Dilruwan up two runs shy of a well-deserved half-century, and the left-arm quick removed No. 11 Lahiru Kumara a couple of balls later to bring an end to what had appeared an interminable innings. It was the first time he had taken five wickets in an innings, but for Pakistan’s most consistent fast bowler over the last couple of tours, you feel sure there is more to follow. At that stage, Sri Lanka walked into the changing room, likely confident it was their day, maybe even their Test match, and the final hour represented an opportunity to ram that point further home. But Pakistan came out determined not to block their way through the fourteen overs they faced, both openers taking the attack to the quicks right from the outset. Abid Ali’s confidence wasn’t surprising, given his form, and Shan Masood didn’t shy away from putting bat on ball either, and got off to a start evocative of the form he displayed on Pakistan’s tour of South Africa at the start of the year, when he regained his place in the side.Sri Lanka turned to Embuldeniya within five overs, and while he got the ball to turn, there were no genuine chances. The 50 partnership came up before the end of the day, and when the light finally faded, Pakistan were a mere 23 runs away from levelling the scores. The Test match may be evenly poised, but the evidence of the last half-session suggests Sri Lanka’s fourth-innings chase will be anything but routine.

Jadon Sancho sent £350k to £50k ‘make or break’ transfer warning after following ex-Man Utd team-mate Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa

Jadon Sancho has been sent a “make or break” warning at Aston Villa, with the threat there for his wages to drop from £350k-a-week to £50k.

Winger tumbled out of favour at Old TraffordFailed to secure permanent move to ChelseaNow under pressure to succeed at Villa ParkFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

That is still very good money, but Sancho has grown accustomed to operating at the elite end of Premier League pay scales. He was handed a lucrative contract when leaving Borussia Dortmund for Manchester United in 2021.

That move has not played out as planned, with just 12 goals being recorded for the Red Devils through 83 appearances. A loan spell at Chelsea in 2024-25 allowed the Conference League crown to be captured, but the Blues paid their way out of a purchase obligation.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sancho now finds himself at Villa, having trodden a similar path to Old Trafford colleague Marcus Rashford – who spent time in the West Midlands last season. The 25-year-old winger has been informed that he has to deliver on expectations.

(C)Getty ImagesWHAT AGBONLAHOR SAID

Villa legend Gabriel Agbonlahor has told : “His stats are obviously getting worse and worse. For me, his contract is up at the end of the season. I think Manchester United might have the option of an extension of one year. It’s make-or-break. If he doesn’t put in a top season for Aston Villa and do really well, your £350,000-a-week will go down to £50,000-a-week at your new club.

“The problem is, Rashford’s similar, one game is unbelievable, and you’re like, ‘Oh yes,’ next week, ‘Oh, you’re not running around, you don’t fancy it today?’ That’s been the problem with Sancho, and if he does that at Aston Villa, he won’t play.”

BBL previews: Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers

The Scorchers have built a new squad after last season’s wooden spoon, and the Stars will hope to top last season’s show

But they rode the wave of momentum to make the final after finishing fourth. There were a lot of positives to take out of their best season to date despite the bitter disappointment at the end. What’s changed for the season? They have a new coach after Stephen Fleming stepped down. Former captain David Hussey takes the reigns of a squad that has shaped nicely. They have added Dale Steyn and Pat Brown as their overseas fast bowlers who will play roughly half the tournament each as well as Nathan Coulter-Nile, who is primed to play a big part in what could be his first full BBL for many years. Hilton Cartwright also comes into the squad as an all-round option. He has a modest T20 record with the bat, but he and Coulter-Nile add exceptional athleticism in the field which the Stars view as vital on the wide expanses of the MCG.Australia impactMaxwell’s availability will be a big question. He has been away from cricket since October to manage his mental health, but is back playing club cricket in Melbourne and looks set for the BBL. Normally, he would be an automatic pick for the India ODI tour but the Stars will benefit if he doesn’t go. Marcus Stoinis, Peter Handscomb, and Coulter-Nile could be in the national frame but seem more unlikely than likely, which again helps the Stars. The only man they may miss is Adam Zampa, who will almost certainly travel to India.Player to watchNic Maddinson had also taken a mental health break this season but he is in the form of his life with the bat and seems most comfortable in the Melbourne environment. This edition they are looking to better that record with more variety in the attack.

Late January transfer at Aston Villa could supercharge Moussa Diaby

After 21 matches in the Premier League, Aston Villa are still holding their own near the top of the table.

That said, since the 1-0 win over Arsenal at the start of December, their performances have been less convincing with just two victories from five games.

Therefore, with Unai Emery looking to secure Champions League football and a trophy this season, a new signing could be on the cards.

Unai Emery is targeting a new forward

According to a report from Ben Jacobs, writing for GIVEMESPORT, Villa are interested in signing Armando Broja.

The reporter noted: "Broja remains a possible exit with Fulham one club to watch. Marco Silva really wants a striker this month and it's understood Fulham are currently considering a loan.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

"Aston Villa also like Broja but haven't yet made an enquiry. Wolves have also explored Broja but currently feel the price is too high. West Ham can't be entirely discounted due to holding a historical interest having made a £33m bid in summer 2022."

Jacobs further states that Chelsea are willing to cash in on the Albanian, but only for a minimum fee of £35m.

Moussa Diaby became Villa's club record signing in the summer, as he joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £51.9m.

The 24-year-old forward has four goals and assists apiece in 21 Premier League games, but the Spaniard has looked to manage his minutes to an extent, as highlighted by his 65 minutes per game this season.

diaby-kamara-luiz-aston-villa

However, Diaby's best campaign to date was in the 2021/22 Bundesliga season, where he scored 13 goals and registered 12 assists.

In that side, he combined with a traditional target man in Patrik Schick, and the potential signing of Broja, who has a similar style of play to the Czech Republic striker, could see Diaby reach similar standards.

The Chelsea forward has only played 36 minutes per game at Chelsea this season over 13 appearances, with his lack of playing time being the driving force behind a potential exit. With that in mind, the table below shows a selection of Broja's statistics from the last year.

The 22-year-old has had an awful time with injuries over the last couple of seasons, notably missing 45 games since December 2022, which has clearly impacted his confidence in front of goal. The striker's goal statistics prove that, but his xG suggests that his movement and ability to arrive in the right areas are excellent.

Broja would slot into Diaby's current position as a second striker, which would ultimately allow the France international to play in his preferred wide-right role, where he can use his dribbling and speed to burst past the opposition full-back, which he can't do in the inverted role where the pitch is more compact.

Villa signing a traditional centre forward to play alongside Watkins and operate in the box should see Diaby's output and creativity increase significantly, as he already ranks in the top 9% and top 6% of wingers in the Premier League for crosses and expected assisted goals.

Furthermore, with Broja having been described as a "complete forward" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, his ability to combine play and beat a man would also provide Diaby with more space to work his magic, and increase the number of times he can get himself in and around the box to score for himself.

The Chelsea attacker clearly needs minutes and the right environment to succeed, and alongside the likes of Watkins and Diaby, it is difficult to see him failing at Villa if he were to switch London for the Midlands.

Tottenham preparing substantial £30m transfer offer to sign Wolves star

Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur have been very active in the first half of the January transfer window, and it seems they may not be done just yet. They kicked things off by signing Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, with an option to buy for £15m, and then struck a £27m deal to sign centre-back Radu Dragusin from Genoa.

Having strengthened their backline and their attack, Spurs' focus is now seemingly switching to the middle of the park. It was recently reported that they were planning to "make an investment" in Wolves' Joao Gomes, "very soon", and there's now been a development on that front.

Tottenham feel the need to recruit another option in holding midfield, having lost Yves Bissouma (Mali) and Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal) to Africa Cup of Nations call-ups this month.

Spurs' Gomes bid now incoming

According to Gavea News, relayed by Sports Witness, Spurs are now preparing a "substantial" offer to sign Gomes. The 22-year-old has been attracting "significant interest" from North London, and Daniel Levy is now ready to step up the pursuit with a formal offer.

Joao Gomes

Significantly, it's said that Spurs look set to table a £30m proposal. Gomes' former club Flamengo are due 10% of the proceeds under the terms of his sale, so Gary O'Neil's side were always likely to drive a hard bargain, but the hope will be that an agreement can be reached fairly quickly.

"Pitbull" Gomes could give Postecoglou a headache

It's only been a year since Gomes arrived in English football, but he's clearly made a big impression on Spurs already. He would make 11 appearances in the second half of last season, seven from the start, and has now gone on to establish himself as a key player under Gary O'Neil this term with 17 starts from 20 league matches.

Gomes was nicknamed "all actioned packed midfielder" by scout Antonio Mango as a result of his aggressive style of play, and the numbers certainly bear that out. He's made the fourth-most tackles in the Premier League this year (57), and a whopping 10 of those came in a 4-1 win over Brentford in late December as he set a new season-high.

Every Premier League player at 2023 AFCON

Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, which Premier League clubs could be affected most through missing players?

ByBrogan Clasper Jan 5, 2024

One criticism of Gomes may be that he takes things a little too far at times. He's already been booked 10 times during his time at Molineux, and he recently got himself sent off just nine minutes into an FA Cup third-round game at Brentford. The hope will be that this slight recklessness can be ironed out of his game as he gets older.

His promise is clear, but you could question whether signing him would be the wisest use of £30m. Yes, Spurs could be without Bissouma and Sarr until mid-February depending on their progress at AFCON, but when they return, Postecoglou will suddenly have a surplus of options all aged between 21 and 27 – a group that also includes Oliver Skipp, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – so that may create an issue in terms of ensuring each player gets enough minutes.

Barcelona to get approval for 6,000-seater stadium to host home match against Valencia with long-awaited Camp Nou return unlikely

According to , Barcelona are preparing to host Valencia in La Liga at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, which has a capacity of just 6,000. The move comes after the Montjuic Stadium was ruled out due to a scheduled Post Malone concert two days before the September 14 clash and the Camp Nou still has not been cleared to reopen. La Liga have approved the Johan Cruyff Stadium as long as all conditions are met, including security, access, press area, and temporary VAR installation.

Barca's stadium situation remains complicated as they continue to wait for the Camp Nou’s reopening. The Johan Cruyff Stadium, typically used for Barca Femini and La Masia games, is now set to host a senior La Liga fixture, a significant downgrade from Montjuic’s 55,000 capacity. The Catalan giants also ruled out alternatives such as Girona’s Montilivi Stadium, while La Liga would not accept proposals to swap the fixture order with Mestalla, Valencia's stadium. The matchday four clash against Valencia will mark another test of flexibility as the club continue navigating their temporary exile.

La Liga granted Barcelona's special request to start their season with three straight away games so that they could get Camp Nou ready for a grand reopening in their first home match of the campaign. While that plan has not been fully ruled out, it seems increasingly unlikely amid licensing issues.

La Liga’s Commission will check if the Johan Cruyff ground meets all requirements before final approval. VAR technology could be exceptionally installed if Barcelona request it in time. Despite the reduced capacity, La Liga has no objections as long as logistics are covered. Barca are expected to officially request the Johan Cruyff Stadium in the coming days. Once La Liga’s Commission confirms its readiness, the Valencia clash will take place there on September 14.

After their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Levante, Barcelona now turn their attention to Rayo Vallecano this weekend. The Blaugrana fans will have to wait longer for a Camp Nou return, as the famous ground’s reopening remains delayed.

From careless swipe to century: 'Test cricket teaches you all this', says Babar Azam

‘I had a lot of regrets about that,’ he says while looking back at his first-innings dismissal

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-20191:46

Missed the chance to put up a good first innings total – Azhar Ali

Regret from an uncharacteristically careless early swipe in the first innings led Babar Azam to a second Test hundred, cementing his growing reputation among the world’s foremost all-format batsman. Azam’s hundred, alongside Mohammad Rizwan’s 95, provided some resistance on the fourth day at the Gabba, though ultimately not nearly enough to prevent an innings defeat, and a 13th straight loss in Australia.Azam drove expansively at a wide delivery from Josh Hazlewood just four balls into his innings on the first day, part of a post-lunch collapse that wasted a sound start and eventually saw Pakistan fall to a distinctly underwhelming 240 all out. That dismissal was not only out of sync with his white-ball prowess but also a burgeoning body of Test performances. So good has his white-ball game been that it sometimes overlooks his steady rise in Tests. Since the start of 2018, he is Pakistan’s leading scorer in the format. An overall Test average of 36.21 masks that surge: he is averaging 50.88 since 2018 and has seen his Test average rise from less than 24 at that point. No Pakistani batsman has more than his nine 50-plus scores in that run, which includes two hundreds, a 99 (also against Australia, last season) and an electric battle or two with Dale Steyn. He came to these shores as Pakistan’s T20I captain and runs in the three-match series as well as in the warm-up games meant expectations going into Brisbane were high. No less an authority than Ricky Ponting had identified him as the one batsmen he wanted to watch this series.”There was no pressure [around the hype],” Azam said. “That is my shot [the drive he edged first up] but I went and played it too early, which I shouldn’t have done. I had a lot of regrets about that. So I practiced a lot on leaving balls that are slightly wide, and I applied it to my second innings. I went and took an unnecessary chance early on in my first innings and I shouldn’t have done that.”The discipline second time around was notable, not least in surviving a testing early spell from Hazlewood, who has dismissed him five times so far in Tests. But for much of the rest of it, he moved unperturbed to a second hundred, an innings stuffed full of not only the off-side whips and drives on which he has built his reputation but also an accomplished technical base.”I focussed a lot on my concentration, especially after I reach 50,” Azam said. “I want to look at how I can make it a big knock. So I try to maintain the same focus for the second 50 as I do for the first. I didn’t work separately with anyone. Test cricket teaches you all this. When I was failing to convert [earlier in his career], I sat and analysed why I am flopping. I just changed my mind-set and have given 200% on my concentration.”Inevitably and understandably given he is Pakistan’s best batsman, there will be discussion at some point about Azam moving up the order. He has moved up and down, beginning his Test career at No. 4, moving up one spot immediately before eventually moving down the order to where he is now: mostly at No. 5, with occasional forays at six. His highest average is from six – nearly 45 – but he won’t stay down there long.”When I started Test cricket I had no number since Younis and Misbah were still around,” Azam said. “At times I would also bat five or six. I batted No. 3 when I came to Australia last and then went off to No. 4. It’s not like they didn’t give me a number. It was based on the team’s requirement and the plan. I don’t ask for a number to bat at. My job is to perform regardless of where I bat.”Not that there is much of a sample yet to pick from but Azam did agree his hundred here was his best – or, more accurately, the better of his two Test hundreds thus far. “You can say that (it was my best). Scoring runs in Australia is very difficult. They play very well and bowl really well in their home conditions. To perform against them you get extra confidence, which I’ve got from scoring this hundred.”

Despite the team switching off in the 60th minute and conceding two goals, the Belgian coach remained unbothered and considers it to be normal given his 25 years of experience in cup matches. Speaking in the post-match interview about the team's display, the Bayern head coach said: "At some point we had a blackout; it happened very quickly. "We have to carry over the momentum we've built up since the first friendly. We can't let that slip away," he added.

Man Utd want to beat Arsenal to "powerhouse" Brian Brobbey – report

Since Erik ten Hag arrived at Manchester United, he's clearly exerted a dominant influence over the club's recruitment, signing numerous players he's worked with in the past. The first was centre-back Lisandro Martinez, and his former Ajax teammate Antony followed later that summer.

Then, this year, Ten Hag made another of his past Eredivisie stars, Andre Onana, his new goalkeeper, and reunited with midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, part of his team at Utrecht. The results of this approach have been mixed so far – Martinez won the Fans' Footballer of the Year award in 2022, but Antony has failed to score in 21 appearances for the club this season, Onana has made five Opta-defined errors already this term, and Amrabat has struggled to maintain his place in the starting line-up.

Still, the Dutchman appears undeterred, and he's now intent on linking up another of his old players in Manchester, based on a fresh report.

United tracking Brobbey to replace Martial

According to The Mirror, Ten Hag is "keeping tabs" on Ajax striker Brian Brobbey ahead of the summer transfer window. The 53-year-old wants to strengthen his attack with a competitor for Rasmus Hojlund and knows that Anthony Martial is poised to leave the club this summer at the end of his contract.

Ten Hag is also keen to add another forward this month, but financial constraints at Old Trafford mean that may have to be a loan deal, likely ruling out a winter move for Brobbey. Unless they can unexpectedly raise funds, they will instead "continue to scout" him until the end of the season.

brian-brobbey-ajax-premier-league-everton-transfers

United could face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal, who are also in the market for a no. 9 and have "cast an eye over Brobbey". The hope will be that Ten Hag's existing relationship with the forward proves decisive.

The stats that show Brobbey's red-hot form

Brobbey, 21, is a product of the Ajax youth academy, but he did briefly leave the club, joining RB Leipzig in 2021 on a free transfer. However, he failed to score in 14 appearances for the German club, and was loaned back to Ajax six months later.

After netting seven goals in 11 Eredivisie games to help Ten Hag's side seal the title, he agreed to make a permanent £14m return to Amsterdam in the summer. In total, he's scored 39 goals and provided 11 assists in a century of appearances for the club, including 12 in 24 this season.

Brobbey was in electric form before the league's winter break, scoring four goals in four December matches to win the Eredivisie player of the month award. He now ranks fourth in the league for non-penalty goals (eight), and fifth for overall goal contributions (12).

While he's actually under-performed relative to his non-penalty xG of 10.2, the most important thing is that he's actually generating high-quality chances through his movement. He's posted the third-higest npxG figure in the division, and places fifth for npxG per shot (0.22), which suggests he should score roughly one of every five attempts when things level out.

In addition to being a strong goalscorer, Brobbey is also effective at running with the ball. Dubbed a "powerhouse" by under-23 scout Antonio Mango, he ranks sixth in the Eredivsie for carries into the penalty area (24), offering Ten Hag yet another exciting asset.
